Short and sweet, with a happily ever after, this story was filled with funny moments that made it a joy to read.

Although a relatively new author for me, I've recently had the pleasure of reading a few books by Heather Long and I've really enjoyed them. 'Pryde and Precious' is her second book in Eliza Gayle's multi-author Southern Shifters collection for Amazon's Kindle Worlds and I was lucky enough to be given a copy in exchange for an honest review. This stand alone paranormal romance is short, sweet, funny and I loved it.

Arianna Ferrars is a botanist who lives for her plants, her babies, and desperately wants to make the world a less hungry place by developing strains of plants that can withstand harsh conditions and still produce a crop. She's also a psi of very little ability or power who struggles to build and maintain her mind shields and she's gone to a lot of trouble to find a quiet place where she and her plants can live. She really has no idea why she's suddenly been landed with a scent project by one of her clan council, it's so not her area of expertise and she needs help to even understand half of what she's been given, so she sends out a few impersonal emails asking for information and waits for them to email her back. She really doesn't get on well with people, sees the others in her department about once a week and no-one ever comes to her home. Ever. That is until the day John Brandon turns up on her doorstep wanting to talk to her about an email she sent, but she refuses point blank to let him in.....

Army Colonel and weretiger John Brandon has been working undercover amongst humans at Karberos for the last five years in order to track and assess potential threats against the clans. When a new lead on Project Pryde comes to his attention he decides it's time for a field trip and less than two hours later, he's at the door of Arianna Ferrars pretending he wants to talk about an email she just sent. He figured she'd be happy to talk to him, not out and out refuse to let him in and when she asks how he knows where she lives, he breaks in. Just in time to catch her as she passes out. Great! Now what was he supposed to do.....

I don't want to give spoilers here, but despite the danger of the situation, I really couldn't help but laugh. Despite some unpleasant moments as the pair try to work out what's going on and why Arianna was suddenly lumbered with Project Pryde, they're also forced to come to terms with the fact that they're true mates. This book was filled with funny moments which made it a joy to read, has a little angst, and a sweet romance that doesn't turn steamy until the very end of the book. It has some really good and some not so good characters briefly passing through the story, a hunky and protective hero, a heroine who has a little fight lurking beneath the shy exterior and a happily ever after. I loved it.

Sadly, none of the books in Amazon's Kindle Worlds are available outside the US so international readers are losing out on yet another terrific book.

An OK read

*I received an ARC of “Pryde and Precious” in exchange for an honest review* This was an OK read. Arianna Ferrars, a reclusive minor telepath and botanist who lives and breathes plants, finds herself tasked by her clan with researching recombinant DNA for scent, a field that is outside her area of expertise. Colonel John Brandon, a shifter and undercover agent, intercepts emails that she sends to various human companies requesting assistance. He then tracks her down and in the course of all the intrigue that is uncovered finds himself developing feelings for Arianna, feelings that she reciprocates.

I have to be honest. I found it difficult to get into the story. The plot seemed to have a few holes with some things such as the knowledge of what a “psi” was being assumed. The romance between Arianna and John wasn’t believable as there was very little chemistry between them and there was no build up to the romance. One minute they were total strangers and the next they were hit by the realization that they were fated mated!

I realize that “Pryde and Precious” is part of a series so it is likely that a reader would have a better understanding of the story if the read the other books in the series. If that was the case, then that should have been clearly stated as I was under the impression that this was a standalone book. It would have been good if the author had given us a little more background to the story.

So in summary this was a story which didn’t appear to be complete as it left me with more questions than answers.

Oh yes I certainly was not disappoint, being that this is my third Southern Shifter it let me flow right though page by page not being able to put this story down. I love it just an awesome read. I would definitely recommend this must read book!!
Arianna Ferrars is a botanist who loves plants. She stays with her plants and never people or shifters besides she is a very low grade Psi but she could hear everyone's thought all together, no matter how much she tried to she couldn't filter the voices and she suffered painfully. Her boss emailed her a new project she was not qualified for but if she refused it could not be good for her. What was Arianna going to do?
John Brandon is a Colonel in the Army as a Military Liason, soon to retire, he made sure what Intel he fed to both sides. Being a White Tiger Shifter John looks out for his Clan. Getting an email red flagged was a signal for him to check out the people. Could it be something bad for his clan? He had to go hunting to find out, John found something he wasn't expecting. I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.

About the Author
With more than 30 years in strength training as an athlete, coach, teacher, professor, researcher, writer, and speaker, Wayne Westcott, PhD, is recognized as a foremost authority on fitness.

Westcott is fitness research director at the South Shore YMCA in Massachusetts, where he developed a model strength-fitness facility and training program rated the "Best Buy in the United States" by Fitness Magazine in 1995. This model is used as a prototype for designing fitness programs.

Westcott has served as a strength training consultant for numerous organizations and programs, including Nautilus, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the International Association of Fitness Professionals (IDEA), the American Council on Exercise, the YMCA of the USA, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, and many others. He was awarded the IDEA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 and honored with a Healthy American Fitness Leader Award in 1995.

Westcott is highly sought after as a speaker and writer. He delivered the keynote address for the annual IDEA conference in 1995, and he lectures internationally on his research. He has written several books on strength training, including Strength Fitness: Physiological Principles and Training Techniques, a text physical education and exercise science majors have used for more than 15 years.

Since 1986 Westcott has written a weekly fitness column for one of the largest Boston area newspapers, the Patriot Ledger. The strength training advisor and fitness columnist for Prevention magazine, he also has served on the editorial boards of Prevention, Shape, Men’s Health, Fitness, Club Industry, American Fitness Quarterly, and Nautilus.

Wescott lives in Abington, Massachusetts, with his wife, Claudia. He enjoys strength training, running, cycling, gardening, and volunteer work.

Good info, but not the best.

I'm sorry "Wayne". It's not your fault. The original "Nautilus" Book is the best source of information on exercise equipment and how and why to use it. This book is okay, but it lacks the motivational value of it's predecessor.

My husband loves to read corporate biographies, so this was one of many books I gave him for Christmas. He just couldn't finish reading it because it was poorly written. I think more and more companies are paying to have their biographies printed because they think it's interesting. However, not all company growths are interesting enough and should be left to the radio & TV talk show circuit.

First,a confession, I am a Great Clips Franchisee and have heard a lot of these stories already. Having them interwoven and in a timeline brings them to reality. I can personally attest to the warmth, caring and absolute honesty this company conducts themself in. I am better off having them in my life. #blessed

SEXY Great Clips

I have not read the book. Not sure I will buy it. I am a great Clips customer. I am 85 and dependent on rides so it has been a God-Sent to go in and have my hair cut without an appointment and very often without hardly any waiting. Last time I had to wait about ten minutes so I watched a father with a darling two year old who "stood" with his dad as he paid his bill. What I noticed was that the little one was smaller than the ad of a young man with a "SEXY HAIRCUT" which reminded me of several rapes on college campuses that were reported on the morning news. I looked up at the dad to see if he had a "SEXY HAIRCUT". They left and I noticed the shelves of SEXY hair products. I have been heart sick for the last week wondering how much evil corporations do by using sex to promote sales. I am even wondering if I can go back. Supporting SEXY this way would be contributing to the devaluing of sex in our culture which I am sure contributes to the 32,000 suicides in this country last year. 700 in Minnesota. And homicides?

Expect the unexpected

This book was not AT ALL what I expected. Actually, I'm not really sure what I expected. But I know this was not it.
I've read some of Ms. Thalassa's other books, and her female leads tend to be a bit on the sassy and snarky side, but Angel takes the cake. Seriously, I choked on my gum, I was laughing so hard. I mean, being a superhero is rough, so I guess you need a little sass to get you through the day.
The Executioner, or X, as he's called. He's a supervillian with a heart, if that makes sense. He kills people with his touch, so his life has been pretty lonely. But all that changes when he realizes he can touch Angel and not kill her. His whole psyche changes after that, and I felt myself grinning with giddiness to see these two work out their issues. Honestly, I didn't know how Ms. Thalassa would do it, because it seemed so impossible. But this author sure has some tricks up her sleeve!
Yeah, yeah, I know. Superhero romance book. BUT seriously! Read it! Because...well, yeah. Just do it.

When did I last read a superhero story? I don't even know. Have I?
I'm a romance girl, but if there's some *sskickin' action in there, I'm all for it.
Laura Thalassa had me from the first page, where Angel explained the inadequacies of her tight superhero outfit with no pockets for her phone. She jabs it into her cleavage, and from then and on the story straight out skyrockets.
At breakneck speed, I'm introduced to the hero.
Wait. Villain.
Wait...?
And he's hot as all get-out, dangerous as sh*t, and freaking just—straight out delicious; did I hear "Book Boyfriend from the roams of superheroes-slash-villains?" Or I could just say, in the words of Twitter: #allthelove
A last warning for the weak of heart: there isn't just some *sskickin' action involved. No. There's a hell-of-alot of *sskickin' action involved, and man is it worth it. To get to that end? That beautiful, awesome, my-kind-of end? I was in heaven while holding my breath through it all.

About the Author
Shane Xie is an Associate Professor (A/P) at the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. He is Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Advanced Mechatronics and Robotics and Editor for the International Journal of Biomechatronics and Robotics. He has contributed over 150 publications to refereed international journals and conference proceedings. A/P Xie has been involved as a project leader or key research member for 30 research projects since 1995. His work has been extensively funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FoRST) of New Zealand and the Natural Science Foundation of China. In the last 10 years, he has worked on 3 FoRST-funded projects (“Enabling technology for Rapid Development of High Value added Customised Products”, “Rapid Product Development for World Class Manufacturing Technology” and “Research and Development of Novel Technology for building up High-tech Virtual Enterprises”), as well as many other projects funded by international organisations and local funding bodies. He has also worked closely with companies such as SIMENS, Kinetic Ltd and Rakon Ltd, and has developed over 30 practical systems for industries. A/P Xie’s current research areas include rapid one-of-a-kind product development, mechatronics control system modelling; intelligent control strategies; image guided robotic surgery; intelligent discrete control methodologies; computer assistive technologies; and rehabilitation robotics.

Bourke (The Burning of Bridget Cleary) writes a sensitive biography of writer Brennan, who came to the U.S. from Ireland as a teenager (her father was the first Irish ambassador to the U.S.) and in 1949, in her early 30s, joined the New Yorker to write about women's fashion. Tiny, fiercely intelligent and impeccably groomed, Brennan was cherished by her colleagues. William Maxwell, a close friend, edited her stories—mainly fictionalized accounts of her Irish childhood, which he greatly admired—for the magazine. She also wrote a "Talk of the Town" column under the pseudonym "The Long-Winded Lady." Yet behind the archly sophisticated persona, Bourke writes, was a fragile, alienated woman who, following a failed marriage to fellow writer St. Clair McKelway, drifted into an eccentric middle age and serious mental breakdown before leaving the New Yorker. She died in an obscure nursing home in 1993. Bourke, who teaches at University College, Dublin, draws a portrait rich in New Yorker history and modern Irish feminist history alike, one likely to do much to foster a new readership for Brennan's work. 8 pages of b&w photos.

There are writers whose lives and works are so synonymous with a sense of place that to visit that location, whether in print or in person, is to feel their spirit in every building and around every corner. Brennan was one such writer, and her works evoke the two very disparate worlds to which she belonged-- Dublin and Manhattan. Born in Ireland, Brennan immigrated with her family to America when she was a teenager. Her formative years in the villages and neighborhoods in and around Dublin influenced her work for the rest of her life, work that would span nearly four decades as one of the most prolific contributors of short stories, book reviews, and social commentary for the New Yorker as the "Long-Winded Lady." Conspicuously torn between her past and present, Brennan would eventually break under the pressure, ending her days in abject obscurity, penniless and homeless. Bourke's stellar biography captures the pain and promise, the tragedy and beauty of this mercurial, mesmerizing talent. Carol Haggas

Angela Bourke is the author of The Burning of Bridget Cleary, winner of the Irish Times Nonfiction Prize. A native of Dublin, she once lived on Cherryfield Avenue, the street that Maeve Brennan made famous in her stories. She is Senior Lecturer in Modern Irish at University College, Dublin, and has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Boston College, and the University of Minnesota. She lives in Dublin.

What's there is great...would benefit from greater depth or more analysis

There are many reasons to read Homesick at the New Yorker. Among them, the book may be the only existing full-length biography of this talented and fascinating author. And Homesick at the New Yorker is well-written, indeed.

But there are shortcomings to this account of Maeve Brennan's life. The review prior to this one speculates that author Angela Bourke may have found her subject illusive. And that may be the case. But what certainly is the case is that Bourke's resulting portrait of Brennan is somewhat blurred. Is it because Brennan moves out of scope of the camera just as the shutter is capturing the image...or is it that Bourke's camera itself is moving? I don't know for certain. But repeatedly, just as it seems we're homing in for some tasty detail or substantive level of depth, Bourke takes off in another direction, and the initial thread is dropped. Frustrating.

The very restraint that makes Bourke's prose so neat and elegant may also serve to diminish the overall impact of the book. Often the author brings us close to gaining insight about Maeve Brennan, and then abruptly pulls down the shade, as if it would be too embarrassing for her, us, or Brennan, to see what would be revealed if she analyzed her subject a bit more closely. Brennan's relationship with her father comes to mind; it seems an extremely important and complex relationship, but beyond stating that fact, Bourke doesn't pursue it. What conflicts did it create? What are the implications for her work? relationships? etc. Perhaps the author figured she could drop the ingredients onto the pages and readers could bake up our own conclusions, but I'd like to have had a few of her *theories* served straight up. I have few if any theories on Maeve Brennan myself, but Angela Bourke must, after clearly having spent a great deal of time researching Brennan.

Another example, Brennan's relationship with her husband. Bourke may be trying to be journalistic, keeping distance from her subject(s), but the result is basically: they did this, and then they did this, and then they did this, and someone said this about them--but not what any of that might *mean* or how it would foreshadow X, or how that was reminiscent of Y, or how it seems to have affected Z. I suppose what I am saying is the author seems to keep too polite a distance from Maeve Brennan.

Finally, the review prior to this one also commented positively on Bourke's frequent mentions of Irish history, in context of Brennan's life. To me, Bourke's attempt to braid her own interests in Irish history, Irish nationalism, and Irish language movement into the narrative of Brennan's life seemed gratuitous and somewhat self-indulgent. There are entire passages that could have been edited out. Not that they weren't in some way interesting, but they had little or no bearing -- neither direct not distant -- on Brennan's life or work. Consequently, these references were distracting and ultimately irritating, rather than illuminating.

Perhaps Angela Bourke is more comfortable in the realm of "facts," rather than speculation or analysis. One biography cannot ever be the only biography. And perhaps this one will spur on others to research and write about Maeve Brennan. And, even if not, Homesick at the New Yorker is, quite lovely indeed, in many ways, a very nice read, even if it isn't everything that might be hoped for.

No Icon, But A Terribly Sad, Fragile Beauty

Angela Bourke, who has written a serviceable biography of Maeve Brennan, must have cringed when marketing suggested she include the totem words "The New Yorker" in the subtitle of her book.

It is such bad taste to try to sell this book by linking it to the supposed chic of THE NEW YORKER. Imagine a comparable biography of, say, JD Salinger with the subtitle, "He Wrote for THE NEW YORKER." How reductive, how pointless, to make her reputation depend, like the sword of Damocles, on the perceived glamour of the magazine!

Brennan, with two spiritual homes, one in New York, one in Ireland, was always homesick for whichever one she wasn't in. The subtitle, with its suggestion of "homeless" as well as "homesick," hints at her eventual destination: pauperhood, madness, wandering the streets like the lowest of the low. It's a sad story indeed, and more of an indictment of The New Yorker's corporate philosophy then anything else. If they stop glittering, chuck them out I guess! Watch out, Hilton Als! Alex Ross, you too!

I like the book but I think Bourke is a little guilty of overselling her wares. One sentence in particular floored me, "Her effect on the people who met her, her eye for human behavior, clothing and interiors, her unsparing reading of literature, her memory of home and her courageous life as a woman alone in metropolitan America make her an icon of the twentieth century." Excuse me, but no, they don't. Angela Bourke, may I introduce you to the word "icon"? It's in the dictionary. It doesn't mean Maeve Brennan.
