It's well designed and gives a beginner a second course in fingering, keys, notes, etc. I would recommend this book as well a Alto Sax level one as a beginning course for anyone wanting to learn to play the Alto Sax. I RECEIVED A NEW ALTO SAXOPHONE FOR CHRISTMAS AND I HAD NEVER BEFORE EVEN ATTEMPTED TO PLAY A SAXOPHONE. I WAS PRETTY WELL VERSED ON THE CLARINET SINCE I HAD BEEN PLAYING THE CLARINET AND BASS CLARINET SINCE CHILDHOOD. I ALWAYS WANTED A SAXOPHONE SO I GOT MYSELF ONE FOR CHIRSTMAS. I ALSO PURCHASED THE BOOK ONE OF PLAY ALTO SAXOPHONE TODAY WHEN I BOUGHT THE SAXOPHONE. I WENT THROUGH BOOK ONE AND FIGURED I NEEDED BOOK TWO ALSO SO I PURCHASED IT. I AM NOT IN THE LEAST BIT SORRY I PURCHASED THESE TWO VERY GOOD LESSON PLANS FOR THE SAXOPHONE. IF THEY HAVE A BOOK THREE I WILL GET IT ALSO. VERY GOOD WAY TO LEARN THE SAXOPHONE.

Screenwriting - THIS is it.

Wow! This is the place to start. Definitely the best tool I've found for identifing the difference between stories that work and those that don't. By 'work', I mean scripts/shorts/docs/novels that are satisfying, marketable and moving - the ones that get made.
You can apply this technique to any story and instantly see what's necessary to make it great - hold it up against any movie and the reasons that movie got made (and others didn't) literally jump out at you.
Every time I'm asked for screenwriting advice - it starts with this technique, 100%.

In a word - superb!

I loved this book! I am taking Jill's class and understanding what makes a great film by deconstructing films and scripts via Jill's nutshell process. I just presented the nutshell for my first screenplay in class and was approved to move forward and beat out the scenes. Making new friends going out after class with Jill and other writers. Jill is extremely gifted at reading or hearing your nutshell for a new screenplay and identifying problems, holes and how to make it a much more satisfying story. She tells it like it is in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Her honest feedback isn't for sissies, nor designed to make you feel good. But I promise if you follow her steps, you will be a better screenwriter!

In a nutshell, buy it!

You may have read a lot of screenwriting books, but trust me—most of the ideas and tips in this one are unique. If you work through the book and think carefully about your story, you'll have a blueprint for all the major plot points and (most importantly) for your protagonist's transformational journey. The breakdowns of classic movies like Groundhog Day, Tootsie, and The Usual Suspects are a huge bonus. Highly recommended.

An In-Depth Look At How And Why We Age And What We Can Do About It

Like all of us, Cameron Diaz is getting older. When she turned 40, she discovered that by Hollywood standards she's over-the-hill. Moreover, she learned that back in 1850, the average life expectancy of a woman was only 40 years. These realizations inspired her to take an in-depth look at aging, including the science, biology, and history behind why and how we age. She interviewed prominent doctors, scientists and aging specialists to ascertain the latest research into how the body ages. In this fascinating book, Cameron shares with us what she’s learned from these experts and how we can apply this to our lives. In the first half, Cameron explores such topics as the silver tsunami, geroscience, the biological differences between how men and women age, aging on a cellular level, and menopause. These topics are covered in great detail, and she includes figures, diagrams and illustrations equivalent to what you would find in a textbook. The second half covers how to slow down aging and even prolong your life, including recommendations on what to eat, how to manage stress and how to strengthen and support your brain.

As a physician, I found her research fascinating and her recommendations on-the-mark. You end up living this story, becoming immersed in the Oxford university life and society as it existed in the period between the wars. There is a conceit by the author in the way that it is written. It is almost politically incorrect from today's view point, but it provides a glimpse into a world that is now gone but not quite forgotten. if Jane Austen was writing in this era of history, the social nuances and observances would have been delivered with the same incisive understanding as achieved here by Dorothy L Sayers.
The story line is not overtly violent - there are no murders (although there are suggestions of possible harm) and the denouement does address something of a hint of the social concerns underlying society at this time.
And then there is the culmination of the five year romance between Lord Peter and Harriet / Dorothy. All that I can say as a response to my thoughts on the outcome is "Placet."

One line to sum up such a complex book? I can't do it.

I grew up reading Dorothy Sayers mysteries, so it's hard to be objective about them. They shaped my thinking and I continue to read and appreciate them as an adult. Gaudy Night stands out to me as the novel where she forced the greatest change upon her characters. Their changes were realistic and complex. There are certainly flaws in the way she went about forcing these changes, but even the flaws don't ruin the illusion that Wimsey and Vane are living, breathing humans.

Sayers at her best

How can one rate a classic? Dorothy Sayers was a Classical scholar whose education was beyond what most of us can imagine. Her mysteries were a popular sideline from her scholarly writings. They contain humor, romance, and (in this particular instance) many reflections of her academic achievement. Set in Oxford University and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish, this novel is also a marvel of thematic development that can only be fully appreciated on a second reading. Sayers winds her themes cleverly into dialogue and narration alike, and they can lead the observant reader to the solution of "whodunnit."

While the ultimate goal of capturing able-bodied versatility remains elusive, this book makes an important contribution to a better understanding and design of future rehabilitation methods and devices via a simple underlying message: a topic as complex as restoration of human movements would be best addressed by collaborative, interdisciplinary research, combining high level and low level views, drawing parallels between human studies, analytic and non-analytic approaches, and integrating sensory data with motor commands. The future will hold up the expectations only as researchers become aware of advances in parallel fields, and a common vocabulary emerges.

A comprehensive book for graduate students and professionals

It is an unfortunate paradox that the advances in medical therapy and care and the increased life expectancy results in an expanding population of physically disabled persons. Many physically disabled suffer from neuronal damage (e.g., stroke or spinal cord injury) that prohibits or disturbs the control of movements; others are amputees that lack a limb or part of a limb. The challenge to assist these patients with artificial motor control and artificial limbs is enormous; it requires a multidisciplinary expertise in medicine and engineering.
From a control engineer perspective, the biological motor control system is amazing. Even the very basic ability to produce a stable walking pattern in rough unknown terrain, which is naturally generated by the biological motor control system, is an extremely difficult engineering endeavor, as any student who tried to stabilize an inverted pendulum can testify. The authors, Popovic and Sinkjaer, are both trained as engineers and are well known for their research in this field. In this book they cover an extremely large portion of the state of the art technology and theories in the field of motor control for the physically disabled. Other books contain more quantitative and qualitative examples about motor control. However, they do not thoroughly address the issues of rehabilitation technology.
My main criticism is aesthetic; this book uses a "wide survey" style, which includes rapid transitions from one model to another and from one result to the other. This style occasionally prevents full appreciation of each model and result. In addition there are a number of poor quality figures and several cumbersome sentences especially in the very first chapter. As a result, the book is rather difficult to read in certain sections. In spite of these shortcomings, the book provides a comprehensive reference source, and it is certainly the definitive reference book in this field. I strongly recommend it for the biomedical engineering shelves of any medical and engineering library and for the researchers and students of this field.

Resounding Endorsement, with Minor Reservations

After much delay in getting my hands on this book in Patagonia, the preface of Westman's book seduced me instantly. In the opening sentence of the preface he asks: "Under what conditions do people change or give up beliefs to which they are most deeply committed?" This is a fascinating question, although the most unsatisfying and prosaic answer happens to be the most accurate: when that person dies. Thomas Kuhn (The Structure of Scientific Revolutions) was well aware of this from his very limited observations, but Westman is driving at illuminating the process of transformation rather than at mere cessation.

What strikes me as odd, is the author's focus on "origins", and his division of the book's material into two equal perspectives. First is a focus on "what was THE orginal question Copernicus was trying to answer" [my emphasis] and follow-up issues and unknowns relating to what question. The second, but not necessarily of lesser importance is "the KINDs of answers offered by Copernicus and those who followed him."

As described, attention may be drawn to use of "the question", which assumes there is a single, most important consideration which is unlike typical cognition. When we are thinking about anything non-trivial, we normally have reinforcing and conflicting networks of complex associations. C's development of the heliocentic model, and the decisions about communicating it were undoubtedly of this level of complexity.

I appreciate the author's diligence and determination to violate the well-meaning advice of friends, and pursue writing this book. As it contains fascinating historical information, e.g.: the association of C with Dominico Novara, this huge volume details the factors which seem perhaps most easily structured within the context illustrated in Creating Scientific Concepts (Bradford Books).
