A sweet Hannukah story

Melly's Menorah is a sweet book about a little girl (in animal charachter) trying to help out during family preparations for Hannukah. It shows the busy family, each one contributing to the special celebration. No-one seems to need little Melly's help but at the end she saves the celebration. The stickers add to the fun. A cute book for 3-4 year olds, I bought a bunch to give away as party favors for our young relatives and friends at Hannukah.

I was recommended to this book when i was looking for something to read to my grand dughters' pre school class. This is an excellent story for the under fives. It is also excellent for audiences that are not jewish as an introduction to the holiday that is light hearted and not too "Religious".

Graham Patrick is a lecturer in Organic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley. He is the author of four other undergraduate textbooks covering medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry.

A Good Very Basic Look at Medicinal Chemistry

This book is good in the sense that it is an easy read for anyone interested in the subject. The drawings and cartoons provide a bit of humor to the text and the writing is cloear and focused. The only drawback to the book is that the layperson does not get the full effect of the book without a very good grasp of biochemistry (hence the term layperson!). To get the real scope of the book, one would need to read a good Biochem text ( I personally suggest Lehninger, et. al. Principles of Biochemistry, 3rd ed.). A good pharmacological text would greatly enhance the reader's understanding of the subject as well (i.e. Goodman and Gilman's). Otherwise, the book does give a very brief, very good overview of many aspects of Medicinal Chemistry.

Outstanding book

I have never written a review before but this book has become a fixture in my life. It has become dog eared, marked up, highlighted, underlined - the works. To put this in perspective, I have a background and degree in computer science and am in a PhD program doing computational drug design. I had enough undergrad premed to be dangerous and to follow discussions, but my true strength was on the computational side. I bought this book to help me pick up my chemistry and biochemistry and, with all due humility, it worked like a charm. The explanations are clear and beautiful and, if you like this stuff, it's a page turner. Seriously. Yes, it is an introductory text. But man is it a good one. From here I have been able to move on to other graduate texts, contribute equally in my lab on the biochem front, and even had the opportunity to ask some questions of Christopher Lipinski (of Rule of Five fame) at a conference without embarrassing myself. If you are relatively new to drug design or medicinal chemistry or pharmacology and want to come up to speed quickly, and have at least, say, AP high school chemistry or maybe undergrad chemistry, particularly with at least one organic chem class, BUY THIS BOOK. I cannot say it enough. If you are in a position similar to mine, this book is outstanding. In the context of my degree program, maybe even life changing. The single best academic purchase I've made. Sorry to come off like a fan boy, but this book earned it. It's that good.

Bought the third edition for a class and I didnt even need this one but since I read the last edition I knew this would be good as well. So far I have not been disappointed and there is a good deal of information that was not in the last edition. This book is highly recommended.

Solid 5th Grade Math Book that could serve as Math Curriculum

I am using this book for both my rising 7th (struggles in math) and my 4th grader (advanced learner) and I can not say enough good things about the Spectrum Math series. Information is scaffolded well, laid out clearly and concisely. Material is not dumbed down. Lesson are SO important for 6th/7th grade and the way they explain exponents and powers of 10 and percents are critical in mastering material needed in later grades. It isn't straight drilling, but offers lots of review. This book actually teaches your child how to do the problems, but you have to teach the WHY. The materials is right in line with a 5th grade curriculum. My 4th grader is advanced learner with exposure to fractions, multi-step multiplication, area models, metrics and division. This is a solid book for her to advance to the 6th grade curriculum this year and I don't feel like anything is getting missed. My 7th grader has gaps of knowledge ALL OVER THE PLACE and struggles with Math. I am taking her back to build her up. She has more exposure to upper level content, but never learned WHY she was doing things and manipulating problems a certain way. This is just what she needs to get caught back up. The schools say they remediate your kids (they don't - they just teach them how to pass the EOG test), but this book actually does teach your child (you need to help of course). If you have your child work through it consistently and with fidelity, they will either advance their knowledge one level or bridge gaps they may have missed at this level. I feel relieved to have found this series for both my girls and am excited to start the 6th grade workbook which is also high rated in my opinion.

These workbooks are how we keep our kiddo's brain exercised during summer months. They are great for self-paced and self-managed learning.

SUGGESTION: If you use this for alone quiet time, don't be surprised if they return a completed chapter in less than 5 minutes -- unless you rip out the answer key and hide it before handing them the book. True story.

Please do Dr. Covey justice by chunking out books of solid substance, even quoting from his old books. Sad to see Franklin Covey so "speculative" to spin off many so called new books by Dr. Covey, but actually just "copy and paste" and lumped them into "new books" from his old books. If you flip through pages in this book, it is actually "not very much content-loaded" . We can simply google search Dr. Covey's quotes for free instead of buying a book like this. Very unlike another recent book, "Primary Greatness" also by Franklin Covey, which has real meat and important substance. Don't kill the goose that laid the golden eggs by using quick fixes to launch a lot of books under Dr. Covey's name even though he actually passed away, and yet not really got involved in those so called "book projects" before he passed away. As years go by, the new generations cannot really tell which books Dr. Covey truly written by himself, and which are actually commercial, non-significant spin-offs riding on his brand name or reputation. Do him justice by not watering down the great contents of his original masterpieces. Actually all the spin-offs are repetitive and un-meaningful line-extensions like those on the supermarket shelves!

A thoughtful, helpful, and engaging introduction to the theological influence of Thomas Aquinas...

I have known about Thomas Aquinas for many years but remained largely unfamiliar with the particulars of his prodigious influence until listening to the audiobook version of Timothy Renick's "Aquinas for Armchair Theologians." Renick offers a helpful and accessible survey of the many aspects of Thomas Aquinas' writing and influence that continue to shape modern society, these many centuries later.

Leaning heavily into the epic Summa Theologica, Renick covers a wide range of material, from politics and war to sexuality and abortion. And he strikes a delicate balance of describing Aquinas' positions in understandable terms, using relevant examples and clarifying analogies, without falling into the easy pit of cheap oversimplification. He also struck a helpful midline of acknowledging and honoring the widespread influence of Aquinas without resorting to hagiography. Indeed, there is much of Aquinas' thought that is seemingly timeless, while other stuff is shockingly antiquated, and Renick thankfully acknowledges both realities. I also found Renick's comparison and contrast between the theological thought and influence of Augustine and Aquinas to be insightful and helpful in understanding the origin of the prevailing ideas of more contemporary (Protestant) theological streams.

My primary critique of the book is simply that I found Renick's attempts at humor to mostly fall flat. His references to Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys are already terribly dated. And I'm not especially prudish, but some of the innuendo in the chapter about sexuality seemed to jettison any interest in good taste.

Ultimately, minor quibbles aside, I thought this was a helpful book for anyone interested in gaining some familiarity with the immensely influential life and work of Thomas Aquinas. Renick's book is intellectually rigorous, theologically winsome, consistently relevant, and profoundly clarifying, such that I'm happy to recommend it to others.

Accessible Aquinas

As a Protestant who went to a secular college and avoided philosophy courses like the plague, I knew that St. Thomas Aquinas was a Medieval monk who had a lot of Catholic high schools named after him, and that was about it.

Then I read "Aristotle's Children" by Richard Rubenstein; Rodney Stark's trilogy on the influence of monotheism, "One True God," "For the Glory of God," and "The Victory of Reason;" and "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" by Thomas Woods. It seemed that this Aquinas fellow was worthy of further study. I read "Thomas Aquinas in 90 Minutes," which turned out to be a waste of an hour and a half. Then I found this book, which served as an excellent popular introduction to one of the greatest philosopher/theologians of any age.

St. Thomas' writings have had a profound influence in shaping our modern world. Almost everything about our Western value system owes something to his thought. Renick's book explains how this can be in brief, clear, easy-to-understand English. You can read the book in a single sitting, but I would recommend spending some time thinking about each chapter before going to the next. The last chapter of the book gives advice on how to read Aquinas, which is very helpful, because (1) you'll want to read some of Aquinas' writings after you finish this book (I tried "Aquinas' Shorter Summa"), and (2) you'll find that Aquinas' writings aren't as easy to read as this book.

The book's brevity and humor are both assets and liabilities. They make the book easily accessible and entertaining to read, but brevity must come at the cost of superficiality, and the humor is of the type that will quickly become dated. Readers of the future will doubtless be mystified by the references to Frazier's dog, Eddie.

Excellent, very accessible introduction to Aquinas

This may not be the most in depth and detailed introduction to Thomas Aquinas, but it is easily one of the most accessible. If you are just looking for a quick introduction before jumping in deeper, this is the book to start with. It could easily be read in a day if you wished, yet it provides the essentials of who Aquinas was and what he's all about.

Being raised Catholic, I had some idea that Thomas Aquinas was a giant in the eyes of the church, but I had no idea of his extensive influence on western thinking. This book shows the influence of Aquinas in our modern culture, not just within the Catholic church. Of course not all of Aquinas's thinking has survived into our modern culture. Some of his ideas are very much at odds with modern culture. This book is well balanced in describing Aquinas's greatness while at the same time recognizing that even great thinkers can have strange notions.

If you are Catholic and looking for spiritual reading, you might be put off by the fact that this is not a book written to acknowledge Aquinas as a saint, but I would encourage you to put aside your misgivings. The book provides such an easy introduction to Aquinas, you are more likely to read more of Aquinas's writings, and to understand them better for having started with this book, than if you were to just jump into his works without this introduction.

On the other hand, if you have no interest in Aquinas for religious reasons, but just want to know about him and his influence on western thinking,this is certainly a book you can feel comfortable with. There is no proselytizing here. The perspective is simply of Aquinas as a great man whose influence on western thought has been extensive.

A particularly helpful feature is the last chapter in which some tips are given if you want to begin reading Aquinas's works directly. The format of the Summa in particular is very helpful to understand. There is also an excellent list at the end of the book with suggestions for further reading.

All in all, this is a brief but excellent and very accessible introduction to Thomas Aquinas.

Great book!! Check out the app for iPhone and Android first though.

The book is about as good as guide books get. Personally I used the Kindle version of the book on my iPad and then downloaded the app to my phone for $7-8, which we used constantly on the road. I would say you could easily get away with JUST THE APP, but the book has far more info. I would also say, spring for the app whether you buy the book or not because it has GPS maps whether you have an internet connection or not and we constantly needed to look at exactly where we were when trying to find remote beaches and such. Seriously, buy the freaking app.

We've all experienced the good and bad in guide books, but hands down, this book is all good! The authors really, really know Hawaii. Like having a good friend who's lived there give you advice. They have excellent insight and advice on everything - attractions, lodging, food, culture, lifestyle in HI, secret spots, public spots, weather, packing advice. The book's organization is perfect, everything is easy to find and refer to. We didn't get to read it before we left which would have helped us make an even better trip. However is was incredibly useful for daily planning and for ad hoc referrals. Frank and honest reviews of everything. This is the first guidebook we've used (and we've used more than 20 over the years) that is realistic and honest about food reviews. We also got the App (same name as the book). Don't leave home without it! Works with your phone's GPS - can track you and show you nearby food, lodging,sights etc. Searchable and totally helpful. We definitely had the best trip possible thanks to this truly "Ultimate Guide Book". Thanks for an excellent product!

Small in size, Great in content

I was very impressed by this tiny book. Trying to learn more of my family history, this was a great asset! It even included the name of one of my forbears. A truley wonderful saga. remarkable at it's size so much information on the early vikings and their lives. I rate this 5 stars! Looking for more books just like this one. It was more than I expected. a second edition and truly magnificent. I would recommend it for any one whether Norse or not. Just plain a good read!

Professor Leslie Bethell is Emeritus Professor of Latin American History in the University of London and an Emeritus Fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford. He was Director of the University of London Institute of Latin American Studies from 1987 to 1992 and the University of Oxford Centre for Brazilian Studies from 1997 to 2007. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centro de Pesquisa e Documentacao de Historia Contemporanea do Brasil at the Fundacao Getulio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
