Creme de creme of ECG criteria

I have ready many ECG books. I am a Cardio Tech student. Towards the tail end of the ECG course, I needed a book that clearly listed the criteria. This book does this job well.

Additionally, the author highlights the areas where why it's particularly important to make an accurate interpretation as the treatment would totally differ. An example is the treatment of MAT vs treatment of other Tachycardia.

The author has also done a good job in explaining the practical real life rules and when to not waste time. An example of such is the wide QRS rhythms where there author suggests suspect VT and most important if patient is hemodynamically unstable --> cardiovert. Only if patient is hemodynamically stable, then bother to do a detailed analysis to see whether the wide QRS is dues to aberrant beats. I am sure I will find these practical tips useful in the field.

Although in my job, I will most likely be doing ECG's, it's good that the author has given some practical tips on what the cardiologist will most likely be doing. Being by the side of the cardiologist, this should help me to understand what's going on. An example of this is during the tachycardia such as due to A. Flutter, performing carotid massage, and other procedure should lower the rate to identify the flutter from SVT.

All in all, I found this book to be different from most ECG books in the sense that it is like a ready reckoner of ECG interpretations, with lots of practical advise, and tips in a concise manner.

money well spent

I monitor nuclear stress test and this book has been invaluable to me. I carry it in my pocket during my day and refer to it repeatedly throughout my day. This is such a wonderful compact resource that I have suggested my fellow co-workers buy their own copy. My copy is already dog-eared from all the use. So glad I bought this book.

Freedom Cometh With The Night

Marlon James's latest novel, The Book of Night Women, opens with an immediate ominous vibe as a much-too-young 13 year-old child dies giving birth to a green-eyed daughter (Lilith) in a dirty, old shack. Merge this unfortunate beginning with the hard living and harder dying on a late 18th century Jamaican sugar cane plantation populated with slaves named after characters portrayed in Greek tragedies and James delivers an intense novel steeped in history, mystery, with a touch of mysticism.

At its core, this is a historical novel narrated by the slave, Lilith, and an unknown voice (which is revealed at the end) in heavy Jamaican patois and broken English. Orphaned at birth, she is raised by the barren and cruel concubine-of-sorts, Circe, and the insane, but caring, Tantalus. Puberty brings unwanted attention and in a brutal act of self-defense, the pretty Lilith is ostracized and placed in Homer's care at the "big house." Drama and more trouble ensue as Lilith vies for the master's attention and affection foregoing Homer's warnings and advice. Homer and Lilith's dialogue and experiences reveal the inter-/intra-relationships and the complex hierarchical strata and blended culture among slaves (house, field, Johnny-jumper), whites (British, French, Irish, Creole, owners, and overseers), Maroons, and Africans (Ashanti, Igbo, etc.). Homer, understanding the power of superstition, practices myal and inflicts an obeah-inspired method of control and revenge across the plantation.

The Night Women are a group led by Homer, a natural leader and planner, who has been plotting revenge and a multi-plantation rebellion with other like-minded women on neighboring estates. Befriending and adding Lilith to the group causes consternation amongst the other women, including two who share her haunting green-eyes indicating a sisterly bond spawned by the same paternity. The plot thickens and twists as Lilith makes difficult choices (and have some made for her) as she grows into womanhood, negotiates the plantation politics, and evaluates her allegiance to friends, her heart, and her master.

Be warned, the novel is written in native patois which might be a bit hard to follow initially until the reader finds cadence in the pages. The language and imagery at times are a bit vulgar and are painfully and tearfully graphic. Nonetheless, James has penned a novel that is sure to place on my "favorites" list for 2009 releases. This novel offers page-turning intrigue, unpredictable plot turns, and colorful characters with authentic voices to produce an award-worthy novel.

Good book but extremely graphic

The book definitely keeps you on your toes. I personally stopped reading the book halfway through because it was no longer a joy to read. The plot gets more and more exciting as the story reads on but the book is extremely graphic. I understand the author's need to incorporate violence to give the reader perspective of the time period, but there was way too much horrific torture/violence I just no longer felt the desire to read it. I am honestly torn because the book is well written and I am dying to know what happens next, but it was hard to put the images of the book out of my mind (which I am sure is what the author wanted). If you don't mind violence or just want a good honest depiction of the daily horrors of slavery, the book is very well written.

Brutal, but Haunting

On a Jamaican sugar plantation, a slave girl is born--cursed, some would say, since she had bright green eyes, like a cat, and her mother didn't survive the birth. The girl is named Lilith and 'The Book of Night Women' is all about her (de)evolution--and what an evolution it is. (Actually, the overarching story ends up being bigger than the evolution of Lilith, but it wears that as a guise.)

First thing that needs disclosure is that this book is a difficult read, syntactically speaking, unless you're accustomed to Jamaican Patois--even if you are, there may still be some stumbling blocks--because the entire book is written in heavy dialect.

Second thing that needs disclosure is that this book is explicit in language and brutal in rendering. If you have a weak stomach when it comes to slavery and its ills (i.e. torture, r.a.p.e, lynching, wanton misbehaviour, so forth), you will heave, possibly vomit, and have nightmares. Thing is, while brutal, I have no doubt it was a near accurate rendering of the time period.

Without disclosing too much of the story, I'll say Marlon James is a bit of a magician. He was able to immerse me so utterly in the time period and setting that I had to put the book down a few times just to get my bearings and maintain my sanity. He also gave me every reason to despise a particular character (several actually), but made me shed a tear for that character near the end. It left me feeling as though I were the one with Stockholm syndrome. And the ending--it was a nice touch, very poignant, and provided a plausible explanation for some of the story's inconsistencies.

The book, however, wasn't without weakness, mainly with some characterizations. The primary characters were well crafted, but some of the secondary characters--specifically, several women in the 'night women' group, blended together. I found myself asking more often that I should, which one was she again? And the story builds slowly--it took several chapters before it took shape. Once that shape emerged, however, the book was difficult to put down.

There are no saintly characters--many are difficult to like at all--but they felt real; the prose and some references might be difficult for non-native speakers; and the story builds slowly (you'll need to actively will yourself to stick with it), but the story does turn out to be a compelling one. Overall, I'd selectively recommend this book because it's not for everyone, but it stayed with me for several days after I finished (and will likely stay with me for a lifetime).

This book is an encyclopedia of the horrible crimes performed by Germans on the Polish people, about a robbery of the museums, art collections and private properties, about destroying all monuments, palaces, churches, about unhuman Germans.

Subtitle Should Be: Horrors Imposed On Poland from Oct, 1939 to Jun, 1941

This is very damaging evidence to any who would maintain the world did not realize what the Germans were doing to Poland which they invaded and brutally occupied beginning in Oct, 1939.

In the book's preface, a single page is the most accurate assessment of what we clearly know now was happening in Poland (even prior to the genocide against Polish Jews) "...mass murder practiced by the Germans a phenomenon to which there is no parallel in the history of mankind". This was written and documented in the "Black Book" in 1942 covering the period up to June, 1941 (at which time they documented more than 400,000 cases of deliberate killings of Poles and Polish Jews. In other words, the world knew exactly what was happening in Poland...either that or they didn't know how to read. By the way, that figure was very close to the total number of US wartime KIA's in WWII.

More from the preface: "The names and circumstances of each of these executions are known. The average for the past two months is 1,576 a day, and yet the Polish Prime Minister, General Sikorski, on his arrival in America in April, 1941, said: 'I am not the representative of a suffering Poland, but I am the representative of a Poland that fights.' The twelve divisions used by the Germans solely for the purpose of keeping down Polish resistance are one section of the Polish front; the 200,000 Polish trainees in Russia, 10,000 Polish flyers in England, 60,000 Polish soldiers in the Near East, 30,000 Poles in Scotland, and the Polish Marine form the other elements of the same Polish front."

Chapter after chapter, the horrors are revealed. In Part III, The Persecution of the Jews and the Ghettos, page 252 is a telling statement:

Quote: The "New Order" which is being inflicted on Poland, and indeed on the whole of the European Continent, will be new mainly to those who have an inadequate knowledge of the Dark Ages. As far as the Jews are concerned, it is the ancient persecution writ large. As one reads that the Jews shall wear a distinguishing garb, that they will have no intercourse with the outside world, that they must not on certain occasions show themselves in the streets, that they must live in separate quarters of the towns; this will give very much the impression of the Nazi order in Poland, yet it is German law dispensed in the thirteenth century, in the statutes called Sachsenspiegel and Shwabenspiegel. The Jews were then, in the Royal phrase, "the servants of our treasury," chattel in the words of King Charles IV, "with which We, in the plentitude of Our Power, can deal as We please." From these conceptions it does not seem to be a far cry to the Nazi doctrine that "The Jew is not a human being at all." It is on these principles, hailing as they do from the darkest of the Dark Ages, that the Nazi "order" in Poland is built up. End Quote

The book's final sentence in its conclusion is also noteworthy:

"Consequently, it is not Hitler alone who is responsible for all the many crimes the Germans have committed in the course of the present war against Right, Justice, and humanity, but millions of his followers."

But the reality is that the Black Book of Poland would become much blacker. At the time it was written, the murder of over 23,000 Polish officers and officials by the Soviet Union was not known. It was not only Germany imposing horrors from the beginning of WWII, it was also their WWII allies and co-conspirators and mass-murders (see Katyn forest massacre and deportation/enslavement of over a million Poles to Siberia).

Further depradations, the ultimate horror of what is now called "the Holocaust" or Shoah, were yet to come. As were the deliberately stealing of blond hair, blue eyed Polish children, sent away to be Germanized and many of who would never see their mothers again.

This may sound like some horrible, horrible science fiction novel to those who are new to the subject area, and mainly the young who study it for the first time. But all this happened in Poland. It is indeed a Black Book, but the title doesn't even begin to hint at what the blackness was, who committed it, and who fought against it.

It is a very, very important testimony to what really happened to Poland up until 1941. Then, unbelievably, things got worse. And at the end of it, Poland was betrayed and given up to the mass murderer Stalin. A Black Book not of Poland, a Black Book Brought to You By Germany and By The Soviet Union.

An outstanding book! I am surprised that I have not seen this book referenced in the footnotes of books about the Holocaust. What happened during World War II in Poland is not often discussed in the literature theof war. Especially in America.

Poland lost one out every five of its citizens as a direct result of World War II. Only the Soviet Union had a higher casualty rate. Unlike the Soviet Union the Polish people have continued to reproduce. Their demographics will make them the envy of Europe in ten years.

Who should purchase this book? Anyone interested in the Holocaust or those of Polish descent who wish to know more of the country their parents fled. The book is extremely detailed in its naming of towns, dates of atrocities, and the names of the victims. Poland was the laboratory of the einsatzgruppen. Here the death squads that would follow the invasion of the Soviet Union perfected the techniques that would be used against those who fell under the rule of the Reich.

The photos are moving. Perhaps a bit graphic. I was surprised by the open discussion of the German rape of Polish women. Unusual for a book I thought that was written so early in the war. Polands prosecution of Germans for War Crimes certainly was more vigourous than the Allies. A good book that should be scanned and put in the Public Domain for downloading.

Easy reader for getting started and understanding OKRs

Easy and to the point book about OKR's

I can definitely recommend this book if you want to understand more about OKR's and lean approaches. It is easy to read and the use of a story line makes it very clear on how OKRs are used ion the specific example.

I have after reading the book worked with OKR, but only for personal goals. Although this is likely easier than for company or team goals, I have still used the ideas from the book and found them useful.

I love the way Christina uses story to explain OKRs. It makes it so much more understandable and relatable. This book is a quick read and leaves you with practical knowledge to hit the ground running. A must have book for those who want to accomplish great things.

The real world setting in which this story is told really helps to point out the nuances where a company can fail. Collaboration, specificity, and passion are required for the OKR framework to be successful and Ms. Wodtke does a wonderful job weaving an important story about what startup success (and failure) looks like.

I've failed so many times at trying to learn computer programming before.

I'm really only a few chapters in so far, but I felt the need to express my unanswered frustrations and how this book answered them.

I've always wanted to learn computer programming since I was a kid, back in the days when computers were the scary things they had in school libraries that adults were scared of getting too close to. I even bought a book on C when I was young enough to only require one digit in my age, and I didn't even own a computer and probably had only used one a few dozen times. I have throughout my life bought, attempted to learn, and failed miserably at learning programming many times. Each time I get terribly stuck and confused. I curse the writers of these books who advertise "programming for the absolute beginner" who I seem so disconnected to. I figured it was me, that maybe I wasn't smart enough, or that for some reason I just could never learn how to do cool stuff with a computer. In my most recent spate I bought another book on computer programming - also on Python. While I did learn to do some stuff, there was still this weird disconnect.

But this book is different and now I finally realize what I had been struggling with: the author *actually explains* what each programming concept does. This sounds silly - of course all programming books do that! But you'd be wrong. Apparently understanding what something like "for i in range(10):" does and what each part is for and called is in the realm of 'computer science.' It sounds stupid, but it took me a while in my first couple of attempts at learning programming in the early days, to realize (because no one actually said it), that a computer program is executed from top to bottom, left to right. A program is more like a player piano. So in the first couple of chapters I was delighted that the author actually says that.

So I guess the difference between this book and all the others I've read is that even if the other books say it's for someone who has never programmed before, they make a lot of assumptions about what you know and what you should have figured out from the context. But this book actually explains each concept as it comes up. In fact, this book is more explanation than code. Which is good because when you're starting out you're full of funny concepts about how programming might work. You don't necessarily understand that when you write "x = 2 + y" and then later change the value of y, that won't actually change the value of x. And the reason you don't know that is because the author didn't bother explaining to you exactly how variables work in Python.

So for learning Python, this is a great resource and exactly what I needed after two decades of on-and-off spates or trying to learn programming. As for learning Computer Science? I guess I don't know a lot about it, but I don't think this would be a great resource. This book doesn't look like it explains binary code to you, or how transistors work, haw NAND and OR circuits work, or any of those sorts of things. There is some of that - it briefly explains the difference between hardware and software, CPU, RAM, etc. But really it's fairly superficial coverage. So the book really should be called Python Programming: A Concept-Based Approach. If I took a class called "an introduction to programming" I would be extremely happy if they assigned this book, but if the class was called "an introduction to computer science" I'd feel as if the class was misrepresented.

Also, I'd also say don't buy this book if you already have a good grounding in some other computer programming language. I think one of those many other books that I struggled with would be a much better fit for you. You won't be lost in poorly defined terminology or zip past what a thing does and focus mostly just on how Python does it. This book will spend way too much time explaining those things you've already figured out by now. If know C++ or Java or whatever, you probably already know the difference between a float and an integer and at the most just need a refresher.

Anyway, I didn't see any other reviews mention these points and I really am glad I found this book. So hopefully you guys will understand better what this book is really all about, which the description does a poor job of doing, in my opinion.

Great Book!

Never done coding before but have been around computers for a long time. Love this book because it teaches you the basics, tests your knowledge at the end of the chapter, and then gives you problems that are quite difficult which will require you to pull all that you learned from the chapter in order to complete. Very thorough but I found that the python language has been updated since the release of this book. I believe this book was for 3.1 and it's now on 3.5 and there are minor differences.

i.e. x=eval(input("type something")) you no longer need the eval like it says in the book. It was rather frustrating at the beginning because a noob like me didn't understand why nothing was working but, google is there to answer all your questions :)

Excellent Self Study Text

One of the best books on Python that I have read. I'm 2/3 through it and have learned more about coding techniques than I learned from any of the half dozen books I've tried to use in the past. For example, I've seen OOP described in other books that just left me puzzled. After reading Zelle's explanation I actually understand how to use OOP and have worked my way through several examples and programming exercises in the book. I am trying to learn Computer Science on my own, without an instructor, and Zelle's book has allowed me to make a huge step forward in developing my skill set. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning Python with self study.

a good perspective on the evolution of mathematics

This book is quite serious scholarship, so one does not encounter the romantic fantasies as for example in Bell's Men of Mathematics. It is certainly worth the effort to read to give one a flavor for the development and evolution of mathematics up through the twentieth century and a little into the twenty-first. I found that because it is serious, I will have to make some extra effort to understand some of the facets of the history addressed. Certainly, some of the topics are discussed somewhat more clearly and understandably in say Wikipedia articles. However, it is advantageous to have a large viewpoint such as given in the book. I teach math at community college and I think that it is helpful to a teacher to have this kind of perspective, even when one teaches only at high school or community college. The book inspired me to look into history more and I plan to do some more investigating. There are many interesting points that the authors bring up. I especially like the way they did not shy away from modern math, which can be pretty abstract. The areas I am interested in investigating further are areas of nineteenth century to the present. One has the impression that while math has tended to become more and more a game, like chess, for the specialist and aficionado, it has also certain elements of great interest that are not so trivial, and join with threads from the past to point into the future. One can have a great deal of difficulty separating the wheat from the chaff in the present moment in contemplating the recent events of the past, as so much of modern mathematics is dominated by fads that come and go. But the grand picture of events over hundreds and thousands of years is quite compelling. I have a basic background in graduate-level mathematics (and have passed Ph.D. quals in math), but I did have trouble understanding a fair amount of the book, especially the discussions of geometry, as my background is weak in that area.

Much of the history of mathematics is taken up with struggles to go beyond rather mundane limitations. "Modern" mathematics is appallingly recent. This is reflected in the weight attached in the discussions of the book to mathematical history that is concerned with such "tedious" details as getting to the point where modern numeration was achieved. The really exciting stuff in math is the more recent developments that have touched our lives with the wonder of mathematical creativity, and the development of modern algebra, analysis and geometry. It took a great deal of time for people to realize the possibility of non-Euclidean geometry, and yet once achieved, new developments came rapidly. I personally would have preferred the authors to have treated the very slow early development of mathematics in a more condensed way, and to have focused more on modern math. On the other hand, I have to admit I found the long history to be interesting as well. Even very simple developments such as the use of zero or negative numbers resulted from humans struggling to progress, often contrary to the dictates of common sense, and in the face of their prejudices. While this does not enlighten one terribly about the most modern mathematics, the story of this struggle is edifying and insightful.

This is first and last a history book. The first chapter begins with the early efforts to count items and make a record of that information. The concept of counting and records of the items formed introduced a new way of thinking. Early number systems were shortly joined by spatial measurements. I found it challenging to imagine what the early number systems met and more challenging to imagine what prompted the changes through the early records of history. This is not just a history of western civilization but includes the influences of Islamic world, China and India. From the number systems the book moves to elements of arithmetic, geometry and number theory. Mathematics slowly evolves into the art and science of solving problems. But this is not a book on how to solve mathematical problems but the history of when the problems were first defined and the initial attempts to solve them. Late in the book actual solutions by early mathematicians are addressed. Again the emphasis is on the history of the men making the discoveries not the solutions. Through out my reading of the book I found I took time to try to write the problem in modern notation and then recognized the solutions I was taught as a student. The book travels across many fields in mathematics some of which I have little knowledge and thus probably did not appreciate the elements of those chapters. This did not discourage me but instead prompted me to make a short list of topics to revisit in modern textbooks next year. Every mathematician should know the history of his craft and reading this book is a fine start.

A must-have for any Math Major

This book is absolutely cram packed with fascinating information. I have a hard time putting it down. It was originally created as a textbook but I consider it a must-have for anyone interested in Mathematics. I have paid hundreds of dollars for textbooks that were not nearly as educational as this little gem. I highly recommend it.
