About the Author
Ms. Medina has devoted her life to the emergence of the Feminine in the lives of women and men. She has integrated the Feminine perspective in her psychotherapeutic practice, and through community development with a focus on environmental justice. After graduating from Colorado State University with a BS in psychology and earning a Master’s degree in Counseling from Arizona State University, Ms. Medina trained in Process-oriented Psychology, with an emphasis in Jungian Psychology, in Zurich, Switzerland. As the Alamosa Riverkeeper, she received the David Getches Flowing Waters Award for improving environmental water resources and recreational values in the Alamosa River through her efforts in collaboration, innovation and inspiration. Cindy treasures solitude that is often interrupted by owls hooting from the cottonwood trees, by coyotes howling from the Alamosa River, and by irrigation water flowing through the acequia (dirt ditch).

I am taking my time in reading this book, immersing myself in the author's reality, her struggles and insights. I'm finding that issues are surfacing, challenging me to once again examine them, relying on the strength and intuitive wisdom provided by the feminine archetype of the Black Madonna. Today's world would have us believe that we can do and be any and all things to everyone. As Ms.Medina so eloquently describes her struggles as a young wife, mother and professional, we are reminded each of us can only be the very best version of our authentic Self. Thank you for taking us on this beautiful journey.

Through Ms. Medina's sharing of her relationship with the Black Madonna we are given a beautiful road map in trusting our inner wisdom and the call to Spiritual Activism. I loved the honesty of her writing. It is refreshing to read the true challenges involved when answering this call from Spirit. This book is a must read for anyone trying to find their way through the challenges of community work, relationship work and honestly, being a human being on this planet. Thank you Ms. Medina!

Ms. Medina's book was enlightening, inspirational and at times, humorous. Ms. Medina possesses an innate talent to engage the reader with her descriptive writing. I am confident that Ms. Medina's book has provided me with the tools necessary to develop a deeper relationship with Christ and His mother. I was also intrigued with Ms. Medina's interpretation of dreams. Her tenacity to protect our land and water from pollution is both admirable and courageous.

Tren Griffin works at Microsoft. Previously, he was a partner at Eagle River, a private equity firm controlled by Craig McCaw, with investments in the telecommunication and software industries, including McCaw Cellular, Nextel, Nextel Partners, XO Communications, Teledesic, and many start-up firms. His early career included five years working and living as a business consultant in Korea and Australia. Tren blogs about investing and other topics at 25iq.com. I hate to leave a negative review for a book about ...

Ugh. I hate to leave a negative review for a book about my hero but this book is just bad. Griffin didn't come up with any new or even original content, the book is made up mostly of quotes and paraphrases from other publications. For the novice investor, it may be a good intro but you'd be much better off reading Damn Right or Poor Charlie's Almanack.

A pale rehash of his blog, and every possible quote he could find...

...with no original thoughts in between. I'm not kidding. It seems like at least 50% of the words in this book are quotes from Buffet/Munger (and a few others), interspersed with the same corny parables associated with them for decades, and absolutely nothing else. To wit:
- The 'oil prospector in heaven' story
- The 'rich man and apprentice buying monkeys' story
- The 'investor and the talking frog' story
- That old story about the Easter Bunny, Superman, and a target of derision (here a financial forecaster, in Chasing Amy a 'male friendly lesbian'), with the same tired punchline -- none of them exist! Ha ha ha. Ha ha. Ha.

There, saved you $20....and a lot of tedium.

The financial writing in here doesn't even come up to the writing quality of Tren Griffin's twitter feed (which I urge you to follow, as his offhand thoughts and reactions there contain far more jewels than I could find here).

not always easy to do - but I'll try

When one writes a review, they should specify REASONS for their rating. Shouldn't they?
That's, for me, not always easy to do - but I'll try.
- I tried hard - really hard - to get through this book. Ultimately, I couldn't.
I've listened to Charlie Munger's commencement speeches. I feel he is a man worth listening to. I direct my kids to those (YouTube) speeches.
And, to quote, Mr. Munger (CM) himself, he became "extremely rich".
So, I would "profit" from that too - from becoming extremely rich - or more rich.
So. I see this book. It's going to "distill" Charlie's teachings. Those distillations will be useful to me. Right?

Well. I just didn't get it.
It's as if the author would take what Mr. Munger has said (and rewritten) and he would "rearrange" the sentences.
But the author adds NOTHING.
If fact, the author makes things worse - he obfuscates.
He really doesn't contribute anything.

I imaging this author "on his boat" (which he tells us about early in the book) and he thinks:
- Munger is famous
- Munger is cute
- Munger is successful
OPPORTUNITY.
Great cover on the book.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.

OK. I know this is not a great review. Heaven forbid this would be my defense of something in a courtroom.
I could hear my adversaries say: "He has proven nothing".

What the author convinces you of is: Get this book. It will leapfrog you to success. I feel for it.
What I say: Don't waste your money or time.
This book is worth ZERO (or less).
It is basically a list.
The author adds nothing new, nothing fun, nothing creative.
Read Graham yourself. Read Berkshire annual reports yourself. And listen to Munger on YouTube.
Or you'll be ashamed of yourself, as I am, for falling for this stupid, sexy book cover.

About the Author
The husband and wife team Nancy and Randall Faber are internationally known as authors of the Piano Adventures teaching method and over two hundred publications for the piano. They recently founded the Faber Piano Institute in Ann Arbor, MI, where they live with their daughter Vivian. Nancy Faber, who was named "Distinguished Composer of the Year" by the Music Teachers National Association, enjoys a busy schedule of commissions for the concert stage in addition to her educational composing. Recent commissions include "The Snow Queen" for narrator and orchestra, "The Picture My Imagination Has Painted" for Flute Quartet and Piano, and "Trio for Flute, Saxophone and Piano". Her pieces have been heard on U.S. public radio and network television. She studied composition with Joan Tower, William Albright, and British composer Nicholas Maw; piano studies were at the Eastman School and Michigan State University. Randall Faber has toured Korea, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was master teacher for both the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. He gave recitals in St. Louis, Ann Arbor, as Convention Artist for the North Dakota Music Teachers, and performed as Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Saginaw State University, and numerous universities throughout South Korea. Best Method books Currently Available

I absolutely LOVE the Faber Piano Adventures curriculum. My pedagogy teacher in college said, "Never believe anything until you hear how it sounds." Now that I have taken a few students through this curriculum from beginning to end, I would say it sounds nothing less than beautiful. My students are extremely well equipped for intermediate classical literature upon graduating and they extremely independent learners. It's almost like they teach themselves at times.
I typically alter the teaching order of the primer level to get them reading on the staff a bit faster. But all in all this is a fantastic curriculum! You will not find a better reading approach than the Intervallic reading Faber introduces... while still having songs that sound familiar to the ears.
A few tips:
Synchronize the books... make sure you at least use the technique, lesson, and theory... they are not complete without each other... and do not go ahead to a new unit until you are ready to move in all books. The only exception is just using the lesson book if you have a very gifted student that can move through more quickly, but even then, practice never hurt anyone.

Supplement with basic technique scale skills that you teach by rote:
Primer: white key five finger patterns
Level 1: black key and minor five finger patterns and hand over hand arpeggios
Level 2a: white key one octave scales and Cadences (this is extremely important as this concept is a huge challenge in level 2b if they haven't already played it)
Level 2b: black key and minor one octave scales and cadences
Level 3a: 2 octave arpeggios and 1st and 2nd chord inversions
Level 3b-5: they are ready for any popular scale skills book such as Hannon

Also sometimes it is like a magic trick to have a student play through one or two of the supplemental series of the level they just graduated before they move on to new books. It cements the old concepts and gives them a sense of mastery because they will learn fast.

Great, well-balanced series for the typical beginning child.

FWIW, I am an experienced teacher with a performance degree from a major U.S. music conservatory.

The Faber & Faber books are hands-down the best I have seen for that crucial mix of pedagogy, fun, and variety in songs. The Bastien books, which I used growing up, take awhile to add real variety. The newer kid-targeted Alfred books are a good alternative to these, but the older adult Alfred books are a miserable mix of musical monotony. There needs to be harmonic and melodic variety or else students will not be inspired (and teachers will be musically murdered if all the songs are based on the C 5-finger position).

While I admire some of the pedagogy in the Thompson and Schaum series, I find that the books feel "outdated" in their ability to communicate with young beginners in the 2000's. It's a bit like looking at older editions from the 19th century: great for serious study, but harder to read and a bit out-of-touch. I find that Thompson/Schaum throw an awful lot of technical information early on, and this can be overwhelming to the beginner. Kids also like lively, colorful illustrations. I only bring up these details because I think the F&F books are enjoyed by my students more than others.

The pacing of the F&F books is suitably slow for the young student these days. They are designed for someone who doesn't practice every day, or isn't fully invested in music, which is a realistic approach given the current student who is overscheduled and isn't committed to regular music practice. I'm just sayin'! For the more motivated students, or ones slightly older, the F&F "for the older beginner" series is much faster in its pacing, and the illustrations and song selections are appropriate for older students.

On that note, if you are using the basic Piano Adventures series, keep in mind that these are really geared for YOUNG students, especially the first few books. If you are starting off a 3rd grader or 4th grader, they will often be unimpressed by the lack of "cool" in the books.

The biggest challenge of method books is that, if you start the students when they are older, by the time they want to learn a Taylor Swift song, if they haven't made some real progress musically and technically, it becomes a long, hard slog. Get them into these books, get them practicing early, and by the time they are in middle school they will be able to learn the songs they want. If you're lucky, the list might include Bach and Ellington.

Changed dramatically from first edition

The first edition Theory book was technical... all about teaching the student the basics of reading music. The second edition has gone more toward the Suzuki method-type teaching... wanting the student to do improvisation. That's fine, but this series used to be more of a technical development book. Just wanted people to know that the second edition is VERY different from the first.
