Sound, logical beginners' course for learning Indonesian

This book is ideal for the absolute beginner who wants a systematic introduction to the Indonesian language without overload. The 18 chapters are carefully structured so that each text can be understood with the words and grammar that have been covered up to that point. There are lots of exercises involving word substition that help the student to gain fluency. (I found this very useful, as I was learning on my own without a teacher.) After you have completed the book you are able to ask questions, tell the time, and say a lot else besides, and you get a good grounding in grammar including, for example, the object focus (kind of passive, very often used in Indonesian) which will stand you in good stead later. By the very nature of the book, the quantity of vocabulary covered is not overwhelming, but there is a 24 page Indonesian to English mini-dictionary at the back, and the second book (Bahasa Indonesia : Book 2 : Introduction to Indonesian Language and Culture) makes up for this deficit.

the exercise repetition helps you remember better

this book has a good amount of vocabulary and gives good explainations for every exercise. sometimes, infact you feel like you're reading the same thing over and over. the only problems i have are, there are no answers for the homework problems which consist of ten questions per chapter in addition to the regular exercises, the other is that i have not yet been able to find the tapes which would be a good accompaniment to the text. so far, though, i like what i've seen.

A very easy book to learn indonesian

Most language learning books are quite similar. No one writing a book is going to make a breakthrough in teaching a foreign language. The trick is to write a book in a way that the reader will be interested and will not give up. The format of this wook is exactly that. It tells short stories in every chapter. Readers are naturally intrigued about what will happen next, so if the book is written well, readers will keep on going. An interesting story will also make it easier to remember the vocabulary, as it creates easier associations in the learner's mind. An interesting thread stays longer in someone's mind, so that it makes it easier to retrieve a particular sentence. The book does not overburden the reader with grammar explanations. Grammar explanations are necessary indeed, but they should never surpass the story or conversational section. The natural way of learning does not involve understanding why things are said one way or another, although the adult's mind tends to always want to understand "why." The natural way or acquiring a language, however, takes about 7 years of constant exposure. In order to accelerate this, memorization techniques and grammatical explanations are commonly used as tools to teach a language. As these tools are artificial, it is best to reduce them to the minimum level. This book follows quite well the above precepts and allows the learner to immerse himself in a story and start acquiring the language.

Fascinating!

Another treasure from the past, this book, written by a medical doctor, was originally published in 1907. A virtual encyclopedia of precious and semi-precious stones and metals, this nearly 500-page book is loaded with lore and sprinkled liberally with anecdotes and historical information on how precious and semi-precious stones and metals were used in the past. There are many fascinating stories about the superstitions and legends that surrounded them; who owned what and how much; which diamonds were the biggest and how big they were, stories about kings, queens and potentates who owned them, how traditions surrounding precious and semi-precious stones came to be, and much more.

Although the book is encyclopedic, fortunately, it doesn't read like an encyclopedia. Dr. Fernie is a gifted writer whose engrossing style grabs and holds the reader's interest as he brings the history and lore of metals and precious stones to life. Of course there are sections for each stone and metal so you can go right to one you are interested in if you don't want to read the whole book.

In his introduction the good doctor states that the purpose of the book is to vindicate our forefathers' confidence in precious stones and metals for remedial uses either by scientific grounds or simple experience. Much of the information is anecdotal, and he freely admits that some if it is pure superstition, but not all. The metal copper is a notable exception as there is plenty of proof of its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It seems that whole villages near copper mines were infected with cholera, except for the miners. Doctors, noting this, began to experiment and found that by causing a person to wear a small copper plate over his/her stomach area, the seat of the disease, the person was protected from contracting cholera. This was proven again and again with soldiers and many others. He also adds other information about how copper was used to kill bacteria and viruses in water.

I did a little research on the Internet and found that in 2008 scientists had proven the ability of copper to kill bacteria and viruses and were doing research on uses for it, one possibility being use as touch plates in public places. There is nothing to indicate that anything was ever done. I am not good at reading scientific jargon, but my understanding from reading the report was that they tried to break it down into its components and found that wasn't possible. Sounds like they were looking for something to patent, and when they couldn't find it, they may have abandoned the project. Makes me wonder how many other useful and valuable substances have never been used for the benefit of the public because they couldn't be patented.
The table of contents is really a convenient index in the front of the book of where information on each stone and metal can be found. There is a general index in the back.

All in all very enjoyable to read and a valuable addition to my library.

Great delivery & prompt service

Great delivery & prompt service. This was a replacement for an old book that fell apart and was no longer useful. So you must know I like this book as it provides detailed facts on precious stones which I needed to learn about (since the 1950s). Highly recommend this book for those who want to get into the occult (secretive) powers and how to use such for better understanding of metaphysical properties of Mother Nature's cupboard.

I actually owned this book years ago, lost it and found it here again on Amazon. This book is a must read for anyone who makes jewelry like I do. More than useless superstition it will give the essential information to use specific stones for specific purposes. Both spiritual and medicinal. It will make the difference between making a pretty, if expensive bauble and a priceless amulet or talisman. If you are not the least bit interested in anything spiritual or occult this book is not for you. If gemstones are just for decoration, this book is not for you. If the only medicine you take is chemicalized poison endorsed by the FDA, this book is not for you.
It was originally written in the early 1900's so some of the tone and syntax used might be a little trying to get through, it is well worth the effort.

Proved to be very helpful containing not only a plan but also an example for each type of letter. But if you want to earn more than 6.5 band score ,the ideas, vocabulary in the examples, may not satisfy you.

Inside Gang Life in the 80s

Michael Scott, also known as Rocker, did a great job with this book. Basically, it is a collection of stories about the ups and downs of living the 80s gangbanging life. The book is written in an oral style as if you are hearing the stories told to you over a beer. The true-to-life events are not cliche or predictable.

In Chicago, I was acquaintances with some former gangbangers due to strange circumstances. One was a former TJO, which was a white street gang also of the People Nation that had been strong in the 1970s.

TJO stands for Thorndale Jarvis Organization or Thorndale Jag Offs or Thieves, Junkies and Outlaws. They were riding with the five, but I had a friend who was formerly of the Folk Nation, too. That whole story gets really complicated, really fast-- but the point is that I have been been around some former gangbangers who have done jail time.

I'm from the suburbs and most people don't realize that street culture is such a different culture. The way Rocker writes is true to the street style. The use of similes is especially prevalent because it's a spoken and visual culture. Also the style of "jokes mixed with violence" is seen so often in cheesy action movies, but that same mix is the real deal in the book. It's how people talk and deal with events.

There are spelling and gramatical errors in the book so it could have used a good editor, but my only real complaint is that the ending should have had more detail. The ending events went so fast that I wanted to know more about certain choices that were made.

I would definitely read more books by this author.

Lords of Lawndale

The Gaylords were a predominately White street gang in Chicago that had its beginnings in the 1950's, and Michael Scott tells his story as a member during the early 80's. Chicago, as all major cities in the United States, experienced a dramatic shift in its racial and ethnic makeup during the 20th century. The process of assimilation is not always a smooth one and Lords of Lawndale tells a compelling story of what happens when things go wrong.

It is a violent story of people protecting their neighborhood. Innocence is lost at a young age, as is life itself sometimes. The amount of violence Michael Scott presents is disturbing and it is a sad state of affairs to realize that this is all too common for the young men of Lawndale. For Michael Scott and his fellow Gaylord members violence was what Little Leaugue Baseball was to other boys.

The reader should not worry about the grammar and punctuation mistakes that exist--no armchair sociologist would be willing to do the field research for such a book. This book was written by a warrior of the streets.

I finished Rocker's book last night

I finished Rocker's book last night. I enjoyed it.

By the time that I had reached the middle of the book, I was beginning to notice the large and ever-changing cast of characters, and the relentless repetition of the ongoing fight. But I guess that was the point. At different times, different people came and went, but the same old fight went on and on and on, and if anything, it got worse..

In the end, although the Gaylords put up a good fight, it was finally over - at least in the old neighborhood. Maybe the fight wasn't really won or lost, depending on how you look at it, but there was no denying that it was over.

There were no preachy moral sermons about what happened. The reader is told the story and is then left alone to think about it. Was one side or the other right or wrong? Was it all worth it? Maybe, as the saying goes, "You had to be there". The book takes us there, for a while.

I was impressed by Rocker's ability to recall what happened in such detail. I doubt that he took an hour or two off each day, to write about things as they were happening. He probably wrote about it at some later time. Perhaps he was able to recapture some of the facts by interviewing others.

Even though there are some imperfections here and there, it is an impressive book. So it isn't a grammar manual. It's imperfections give it an air of authenticity. After all, who would expect that a bunch of street fighters would always use flawless English?

The book is a job well done - especially considering that it is an author's first effort.

Activating your holy guardian angel.

A serious blue print on how to activate you personal HGA, I must state I'm no fan of patriarchal religions or occult grimore. however working with my HGA for many years, I can attest to what the authors has put forth in this book, there was so much about this grimore that I absolutely agreed with, the first being and most important in my book, is everyone's experience will be different and what is known and proven is if you do the work, you will see results. on page 69 the author goes into detail the disappointment of not upon completing his 18 month Abramelin Samekh ritual he did not get the fireworks, and loud booming voice, puff of smoke he envisioned. and consulted with those whom he trusted one person being author Ochani Lele who laughed and said, what no flash of light?? puff of smoke no demooooooooooon!!, I was laughing so hard I fell off the couch, this is so true and I loved that the author kept it real for folks, as some folks really do expect this after doing any type of spiritual initiation or sabbatical into occult mysteries,, the author also stresses another important point, of going within and shutting the hell up, you will not be able to hear spirit if you cannot turn the frequency off in the mundane world, you must spend time in nature to connect with your higher self, you really must be able to fully connect with self and be and be able to see and hear into the spiritual realm, this requires practice and dedication.

This book is a serious manual to not only activate your HGA but to also learn how to work with this energy, the author also stress also if your HGA tells you things, you already know its not that entity, I can also attest to that, your HGA should be able to tell you things you would never know about a person, situation of thing. there were so many gems in this book and these are the type of grimore that goes straight to the heart of the matter, you will find credible information, rituals and instruction on how to invoke and ultimately have a better quality of life, knowing you have celestial forces at your disposal. while everyone is not going to do an 18 month initiation process after all this is not the 36 chambers of Shaolin type initiation, but expect the same results if you do the work, the author does show you how you too can tap into this energy and have it work for you, that is provided you do the work and apply yourself diligently and honestly, this is serious stuff and not for the lazy practitioner, I will agree with the author while some people may be able to activate this energy easier that others, its no reason why anyone cannot begin to tune into this wonderful frequency, should they devote themselves to this field of study, btw stunning art work inside the cover of the book.

This is absolutely wonderful! The material in this book is made up of individual essays by people who have actually gone through the rite "K&C of the HGA". It is broken down into 4 parts: ' The Nature Of The Angel ' which is very enlightening, lucid and written from three very different perspectives and traditions. 'After The Angel ' which is worth the price of the book alone and should be read more than once, i think anyway, and gives you much to think about and consider if you Really want to do this and the ramifications of going through the ritual. ' The HGA In The Magickal Schools' the two essays in this section are very good. One is from the Ogdoadic Tradition, one from a Thelemite's perspective which is really interesting indeed. And finally, 'The 2011 Blogosphere Debates' which is what brought about the creation of the book in the first place.

The chapters are made up of personal accounts of trying to meet and actually meeting the HGA. There are times when the information will make you take note of who you are and if you are really ready to undertake the rite. It makes the old saying "Man Know Thyself" of supreme importance! Then there are times when it will make you smile, shudder and think about why you want to meet your HGA and what you stand to gain.

I wish that more people would write books like this. The insights that come from personal experience and practice are extremely helpful and genuine. This is what this book is about, genuine experience. Priceless indeed.

The book is really a 'Must Have' and should be read by all who are interested in performing the Rite or if you are interested in Angels in anyway at all.

An indispensable tool - The missing piece to the Law of Attraction

You will be amazed at how quiet and peaceful your mind will get and how positive and confident you will get once these interferences are removed. I have spent about the last 10 years looking into the realm of energy psychology and I am constant awe of the discoveries of GM Choa!

The real gem of this book is using prana to remove non-physical entities like though-forms and elementals. These tiny little psychic parasites can be a huge aggravating factor in something like schizophrenia or even drug addiction.

A skilled pranic healer can remove even a severe drug addiction to heroine in 1-3 treatments! Amazing considering the length of traditional treatments.

Pranic healing has been tested in HUNDREDS of studies, some of them even double blind. Some of the effects were at a distance! Some were even on cultured cells in a petri dish, but time and time again pranic healing proved effective.

Lacks the depth that I'd anticipated on reading it. While focus is clearly on technique and methodology, and this is understandable,
any book exploring the integration of the effects of subtle energies (Prana, Chi, Ki, etc.) and psychology, I think, should included the
added "depth knowledge" that explains how and why the techniques and methodologies work. As a result, I think "Pranic Psychotherapy" establishes a learning situation wherein those seeking to become practitioners of the therapy may become trained in technique and metho- dology as layed out in the manual, while at the same time, be lacking in a deeper understanding of Mind, Subtle Energy, and how each are impacted by each.

Great Guide Book and maps.

The Barcelona map was my go to when in the city. The map that the hotel gave me was not as good as the one from the Lonely Planet Spain guide book. I really liked all the detail from the guide book including the history of Spain. I would definitely get another lonely planet guide book again.

Depending on how long your trip is, these pages are super thin & not as durable as other guide books. The information inside is relevant & good, but not very pleasing to the eye in comparison to other travel guide books.
