About the Author
Sui Ishida was born in Fukuoka, Japan. Enjoyable Read

I just finished reading the entire book, and I must say, I'm pleased. There are a few grammar errors and odd word choices inside that sort of put a halt to the reading process, but that comes with the territory of reading translated work as it is. It's still a great collection of short stories on minor events that happen outside of the main story in the manga - centered on the earlier portions before everything goes... intense. It's light novels such as this that shines a light on elements of the story you would never have had if you'd stuck with simply the manga.

Great Side Stories

I love Tokyo Ghoul, it's my favorite manga and anime. So when I saw that there was a side Story that came out, I had to jump at it.

Didn't realize it was actually a novel style, and not a manga. But when I got started, I could not stop. I love seeing different stories within the world of Tokyo Ghoul.

Definitely worth a read for TG fans.

what an incredible book, im a huge Tokyo Ghoul fan, and these short stories were very interesting, i liked how each story would interact with the previous story, making connections through out each adventure. gave us a little insight of some happy moments between characters before the tragedy happened.

In exploring the history of presidential campaign songs, Schoening and Kasper (both, Univ. of Wisconsin, Barron County) researched a wide range of primary and secondary sources. Following the brief introduction are eight chapters divided into three parts dealing with the "traditional era," the "mass media era," and the "popular music era." The authors begin with the earliest campaigns (1789), in which music was sparse. The 1840 campaign was the first to feature music, and campaign songs proliferated through the latter half of the 19th century and into the 20th. Campaigns increasingly used commercially produced pop songs after midcentury. In discussing all this, the authors provide information on the candidates, details on changes in technology (from songbooks to the Internet), and the words to many of the songs. Though third-party presidential efforts, such as the Henry Wallace Progressive Party campaign (1948), are unfortunately overlooked, there is an interesting discussion of the role of the Internet in the 21st century. There is a very helpful, although selective, bibliography, which includes such important sources as Songs America Voted By, comp. and ed. by Irwin Silber (1971). Summing Up: Recommended. Relatable story, could use some focus.

I thought this book definitely had a lot of things going for it. The pacing was great and I felt like Penny was a pretty relatable character–she just seemed so normal. I liked that she was trying to reinvent herself a bit because I think that’s something that a lot of girls try to do whether it be when they leave for college or some other time. The idea that you’ll finally be able to be who you want to be once you get away from the people who have known you forever is one that I think a lot of people can relate to. In the end, Penny really just wants to find herself–to figure out exactly who she is without her family’s expectations. There is something liberating about being surrounded by people who don’t have any history with you.

The secondary characters were an interesting cast. I liked meeting and learning about the different people that Penny delivers groceries to as well as the new friends that she makes. Overall, the characters come together and really add to the small town feel of the book. I love reading about coastal beach towns, so I was in love with the entire atmosphere.

I also really liked how Penny’s relationship with her grandfather was portrayed. It seems like a tough situation to deal with someone who has Alzheimer’s but doesn’t realize how bad it is yet. There were a couple of scenes especially where my heart just broke for Penny’s poor grandfather. That has to be such a hard thing.

As far as critiques go, I think there was a little too much telling and not enough showing from the author. There were times when the book felt very matter-of-fact and like there wasn’t much for the reader to interpret. Everything was just kind of laid out there. I also felt like the author was trying to do a lot at once. What I mean by that is that she addressed several different issues including, but not limited to: an ailing grandparent, a deceased parent, new motherhood, and rape. I just felt like there were too many balls to juggle and because of that, we didn’t get into some of the issues as much as I would have liked to. I also felt like the author tried to do a little too much with the ending as well. It seemed like almost every character’s story ended with a little bow wrapped around it and I didn’t think that was necessary. Not every character needs to have a resolved ending.

Overall, I thought the book was pretty good. The atmosphere was spot on and I felt like I could relate to the main character. I really did want her to succeed and I think this would be a good book for other people to read when they feel like their life is at a crossroads.

This is a book you do not want to miss!

It would be easy to take a quick look at this book and classify it "Young Adult," but doing so is a huge disservice to readers everywhere. Yes, the main character is a teenage girl, but her experiences as a female will speak to (and inspire) women of all ages.

At a moment when a lesser character would turn themselves into a victim, Penny has a moment of clarity about how she has simply been a passenger in the ride of her life. That moment is all it takes for her to become, literally and figuratively, the driver. Taking a cross-country trip to check in on a grandfather she hasn't seen in years, Penny finds an apartment, a job, and a friend all in short order. Determined to speak her mind (and in doing so, learning to be honest about who she is and what she wants), she quickly discovers that it is empowering to say "no" sometimes.

One of the most refreshing aspects of Richardson's main character is her practicality. In a genre full melodramatic "heroines" where losing the homecoming crown is a life-altering blow, Penny makes her own choices, accepts the rewards and consequences as they come, and does so with little fanfare but much thought. She is humble and strong, even faced with deciding the fate of her grandfather- in a compassionate and mature way many adults can only hope to mimic.

Finally, Richardson's voice is refreshing and unique. This is a novel you will want to share with your daughters, and it will make you want to go out and celebrate being YOU. An amazing debut novel, and I cannot recommend it too highly.

Outspoken is a cute fast NA read. Is it life changing and super powerful? No, but I don’t need every book I read to be. Sometimes I just want to read a nice story and this was one of those. World building was well done, pacing was solid and the characters were developed well. The sidekicks were particularly well done and provided some nice comic and emotional support. The love interest was the required dreamy and deep. The family was pushy yet caring and I enjoyed that they weren’t the typical YA neglectful family. They were overly caring and clingy and that was a nice change. Outspoken was chock full of YA/NA clich�s. Friends are made instantly even though main character does not want friends and wants to be broody loner. Love interest is right there and super perfect. Job and living situation instantly work out. However that being said, none of that brought the story down. Clich�s are not instantly bad, they are consistently used because they work, and in this book they work. The addition of Penny’s grandfathers decent into Alzheimer’s was especially poignant and well written and not something usually found in YA/NA. I also did really like the main character Penny and her motivation. She was on a mission to reinvent herself and be true to her feelings and I liked that. Outspoken is Lora Richardson’s debut novel and I feel it was overall a success. I can see great things coming from Richardson in the future with some polish and growth.

Favorite lines – Thoughts swirled around her head, and the only one she could grab onto was that whispering after kisses is practically mandatory. As if using your full voice would scare the new feelings away.

Biggest clich� – “I feel so alone in the world, but yet everyone loves me instantly.”

A REAL GEM

Global Entertainment Media is a GEM! This text shines brilliantly with vibrant language and clear explanations. Though I do have a great enthusiasm for entertainment media and an interest in cultural studies, I am not an academic in the field, nor am I a student, yet the text is easy to comprehend. Analyzing films is a personal practice I've always enjoyed, and now Global Entertainment Media has opened up my mind and engaged my thinking to invest in a deeper level of understanding, through the examination of the economic, political and cultural forces that influence the production, distribution, marketing, exhibition and consumption of both films and TV shows. Mirrlees employs a skillful theoretical analysis, and provides ample examples and case studies to support a comprehensive look at the globalization of entertainment media. Awesome read!

a journey with a dominant girl

the book gives you a look from the perspective of a dominant girl from her early experience (including some funny trial and error) to the refinement of more aware and professional skills.
There are a lot of amusing description of kinky sessions with an heterogeneus selection of clients given with an intelligent and sensible touch.
This book gives also an inside into the psychology of the relation between a dominant woman and submissive men
But if you read it really carefully you will discover much more... .
Really absorbing, sometimes tender sometimes desperate.

Whitty story depicting the path from a novice to a pro Mistress

A very entertaining read, written in a fun way by a clearly intelligent author. I found it interesting to read about the steps taken to become a pro-Domme, as well as the descriptions of various sessions and encounters.

I can strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in the scene, or anyone who wants to learn more about human sexuality and various fetishes.

Bright and Witty

I enjoyed this book. The author tells her story with enthusiasm, insight and humour. The writing is refreshingly clear and simple. Adela T takes time to describe some of the formative experiences, in her home town in The Czech Republic and on a family holiday in the south of France, which she feels influenced the career and life choices she subsequently made.

In a sense, Adela's tale is a variant on the age-old story of a bright and ambitious young person, stifled by the limited horizons of her home environment, escaping to a more dynamic and exciting place, and making the most of her gifts and talents. Her story forms part of the bigger human story of recent EU enlargement, and the resulting mass movement of so many bright, resourceful and energetic young people to the countries that astutely opened their doors and seemed to offer them the best opportunities.

But it is the sexual interest and not the sociological perspective that will draw most readers to this book. The author is generous with anecdotes and observations regarding the many clients she encountered in her early years both as a professional dominatrix and dinner companion. In most of the early domination assignations she has no idea as to exactly what fetish or fantasy the client will wish to experience until she is face to face with him. Her ability to improvise and think on her feet proves essential.

Adela's first client wants to be kicked repeatedly in a tender part of his anatomy, a service of which she has no prior experience. Her first efforts are appreciatively received, but the client politely requests that she kick harder. Adela obliges: "My next kick would have converted a try from the touch-line on a windy day at Twickenham". His one hour up, the client leaves "with a smile on his face, but a slight limp."

The book is often funny, and I laughed aloud at several of the anecdotes. The author's dry sardonic wit and acceptance of the diversity of human sexuality is well pitched to bring out the humour in situations that others might find disgusting or distressing. Although the author sets up her business primarily to make a living, she is attracted by the innate edginess, enjoys much of the work, and obtains fulfilment and satisfaction from many of her professional encounters and relationships.

There is a summing up and an epilogue at the end of the book, in which the author summarises her general views on the men who form her prospective clientele, and her own motivations. In keeping with the rest of the book, the tone is uncomplicated and down to earth. One can agree or disagree with her conclusions, but they are clearly and honestly expressed.

Although this book only covers the first couple of years of the author's professional career as a dominatrix, it seemed to me to fit worthily into the tradition of `An English Madam', a biography of Cynthia Payne, which was in the 1980s the inspiration for the film `Personal Services', starring Julie Walters.
