Intensely informative, exhaustively researched; triumphant

Every time I read this book I am astounded. This author seamlessly weaves together information from obscure and ancient texts to make mind-boggling points that explain the creative mind of Michelangelo. Increases my appreciation of all of the art. This book and " Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling " caused me to buy large color books of the art of Michelangelo; because for the first time I can begin to understand a little and appreciate a little of the thought processes of this great artistic and religious genius. James Hall should be awarded for increasing the availability of the mind of Michelangelo and for helping regular people to grasp a little of a very complicated and fantastic period of religious and artistic genius.

Preposterous

I knew I was in trouble already when in the introduction Hall claims that for Michelangelo "The male figure... was always in some sense a surrogate for the ultimate human being, the dying and dead figure of Christ." That "always" was too categorical for my taste, but I forged ahead. But when I got to his preposterous interpretation of the Doni Tondo, in which Hall claims the Virgin Mary is a stand-in for St. Christopher because she is looking at the Christ child over her shoulder, and then goes on to claim that the mysterious male figures in the background are "sinners waiting for purification in, and passage across it," referring to the river that St. Christopher crosses, but which is not in the Tondo, and which are not even attributes of St. Christopher, I simply gave up.

I am certainly not against academic writing - I highly recommend Marcia Hall's (no relation, i assume) Michelangelo's 'Last Judgment' (Masterpieces of Western Painting) if you want to read scholars who don't feel the need to force things to get published.

This is one of the best books I have ever purchased for helping me understand the aspects of setting up my art work prior to painting. The author, Tony Couch, easily explains the importance of principles and elements, shapes and sizes, lines and direction, texture, color, value and many other informative items to be considered when designing a piece of artwork. It has become my right hand referral book and I could easily read it over and over many times to incorporate the importance of all the design principles. I am so grateful that my art instructor recommended this book which, by the way, I purchased thru Amazon's used book services. I highly recommend that you give the used book area a try for purchases. I decided to order from the "used - like new" section and am extremely happy with the outcome.

Once again, Tony has done a great job of explaining and breaking down all the principles that lead to a successful painting His visual example of
each principle tells the reader how to apply keys in nearly every watercolor and oil application. The colorful illustrations provide links to well written
descriptions. I highly recommend this book to all artists from beginner to advanced skills. Well done!

Reflections on a Summer of Love

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is one of those books so rich in story, in content, and in style of writing that it immediately becomes one of the great novels of the time. With this novel Andr� Aciman steps into the rarefied air of writers such as Jamie O'Neill, Colm Toibin, Reinaldo Arenas, Constantine Cavafy, Edmund White, Michael Cunningham, and even EM Forster and Thomas Mann - a disparate group of luminaries, perhaps, but each with the ability to create an evocative, sensual love story beyond the limits of traditional tales. Though highly recommended by friends over the past year, this reader only now had the pleasure of reading this novel, and the result was to immediately read it again, so rich are the treasures this book holds.

Agreeing with other reviewers that telling too much of the plot is unfair to those who have yet to read Aciman's book, suffice it to say that CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a meditation on the awakening of love, the myriad emotional and physical responses of the act of attraction developing into acting out and becoming an obsession, and the indelible mark that 'first love' makes on the hearts and lives of those involved.

Elio is a beautiful seventeen-year old lad, transcribing Haydn's 'The Seven Last Words of Christ' in his Mediterranean villa where his parents annually invite a young writer for a six-week residency to complete a work and assist the father in his own work. This summer the resident scholar is twenty-four-year old American scholar Oliver who is having his work on Heraclitus translated into Italian. There is an attraction between the two young men, a veiled dance of courtship, and an ultimate revelation of a profound love that becomes intensely physical as it develops from its intellectual and artistic beginnings. The 'love affair', as erotic as any in literature, is fully realized on a brief trip to Rome, and then the two part: Elio remains in Italy and Oliver returns to the US. And after the summer's transforming events Elio narrates the next twenty years, sharing the impact of his first experience with love with the reader. The title of the book echoes the words the lovers' exchange during intimacy: each becomes the other and in doing so completely acknowledges himself.

Aciman writes so eloquently, so sensually, and so intelligently that many passages beg re-reading as soon as the impact of a paragraph is complete. Quoting from the book is almost impossible: where would you start to isolate excerpts in a work that has no weak pages? Yes, this is a gay love story, but it is far more than that. This is a meditation on the miracle of the transformations love induces, and those transformations are universal. Buon Giorno, Tristesse

I read this extraordinary novel after seeing several good reviews, notably the one in the NY Times. It is a story of first love involving two men, but it can't really be classified as specialty literature. Here is a funny, harrowing, heartbreaking coming-of-age tale that everyone will instantly recognize.

A 17-year-old Italian boy discovers the joy and anguish of adult emotions one summer on the Italian Riviera. The lyrical prose, frank sexuality, and clear-eyed tone of the novel remind me of another instant classic, Francoise Sagan's BONJOUR TRISTESSE. I recently reread that personal favorite, and I had it in mind as I read this. Like Sagan, Aciman places us inside the mind of an uncannily precocious teenager, showing us everything through his eyes. His total fixation on the object of his passion--an older American post-grad scholar who's visiting for the summer--is overwhelming, and some of the scenes between the two are so intimate that reading them actually feels like an intrusion. But Aciman insists on telling the truth of every single moment of the affair, and his young hero has an unblinking gaze.

The rocky road to adulthood never changes--but every now and then we get a voice like this to tell us the story. I recommend CALL ME BY YOUR NAME to everyone who was ever 17.

A gay romance novel for intellectuals, Andre Aciman's debut novel is an exciting trip into precocious mind of a young teenager who falls in love with an older man. While Aciman's debt to Proust is acknowledged by the author, one can hear echoes of Edmund White, Allan Hollinghurst and even A.S. Byatt in Aciman's melancholy prose.

Well written but for biologists

Because I do biostatistics for a living and it has been decades since my last formal biology class, I got this book to help me understand the biology of modern high-throughput genomics research. I am impressed with the writing. The author's presentation of history and the framing of ethical issues could not be better. Unfortunately for people like me the author assumes that you have a background in molecular cellular biology. Many terms are not defined or defined long after they first appear. Because the writing is excellent you can usually read through the sections with undefined terms with the help of the web but it is a slow difficult read. The index is good but there is no glossary. The web support for the book is fair (with expanded graphics and answers to some problems) but not really great. There are questions that are supposed to be answered using the web (like how the field has grown since the book was published) but the publisher does not provide hyperlinks to support those questions. With a glossary for non-biologists and better web support this would be an ideal book for everyone interested in the field. Without those features, it is still very good.

The book takes the reader gently through the intricacies of genomics. It is a easy read for the computer scientist with little background in Bio-chemistry. The genetic material is always introduced and illustrated with examples before its importance in the scheme of things is explained. I highly recommend this book.

Not very pedagogical

As a newcomer to the biological sciences, I found this book not to be very pedagogical. From the very beginning, it assumes too much knowledge to be really self-contained - I was forced to Google terms (like Alu, an important transposable element in the human genome) that were left undefined from almost the very first page. And it's not that the level is uniformly too high for me, as it rehashes things like the central dogma of biology that are familiar from grade school. The purpose in this age of buying a paper book is to have something self-contained enough to avoid having to go down a long bunny hole of Internet searching. I found the uneven assumed background to be disappointing.

Its pages are full of colorful boxes containing relatively unhelpful summaries of the main text and over-numerous digressions. But there's enough new material in these boxes to make them necessary for understanding subsequent text, so you can't skip them. Thrashing between the text and these boxes slows me down. Many of the illustrations are non-essential photographs or poorly cropped screenshots. It suffers from many of the sins of bad K-12 textbooks, but given the harder material, it's even more painful to read.

That said, it covers a lot of useful material.
