This book can do you a world of good

I own a good amount of "unorthodox" exercise manuals. I have ordered books that turned out to be, literally, xeroxed copies of old training manuals bound together in cheap plastic folders that a high school student might use, and marketed as "lost secrets of blah blah blah". So between my past experiences and some of the negative reviews on here about this book, I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a nice looking, thick book packed full of information. I am a former personal trainer and it used to blow my mind how uninformed people are about bodyweight exercise. This book delivers the exact same message that I used to try to drill into my clients heads, and that is: YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED ANYTHING BUT YOUR OWN BODY IN ORDER TO WORK OUT!!! I can't stand it when people tell me "I'm fat and/or out of shape because I can't make it over to the gym". Let me make this very clear, wherever you are sitting/standing right now, you can do a hardcore work out that will leave your limbs trembling and have you dripping with sweat. If you keep at it, your body will adapt to whatever it is that you are doing, which means your fitness levels will have gone up! This book will show you what to do. One of the complaints I've read about the book is that it is not put together well and there is no program or regimen to follow. I don't know what book that person was reading, because it's all in there. Sure, after a few months of doing the basics you may want to (god forbid) think for yourself and maybe use a little inventiveness to make your workouts more challenging, but is that a bad thing? My only real complaint about the book is the model Bronson chose to use to demonstrate the exercises. Bronson obviously had some limitations on what he could do with the book from inside a prison cell, and one of those limitations was being able to take some proper pictures of himself. The model he used looks like a blonde female version of Lou Ferrigno in an American Gladiators outfit, which is not exactly inspiring to me.
So to sum it all up, if you want to know how to get into great shape without buying any equipment or going to the gym, get this book, you honestly shouldn't need anything else.

The only fitness book you'll need.

When I first found out about Charles Bronson, I was blown away. He single-handedly shut down a prison after taking a news reporter 'hostage' just to mess with everyone and show how bad of a dude he was. He punched through a sheet of bulletproof glass. He held numerous records for push ups and sit ups. He has the title of 'most dangerous criminal in England', and here the guy's never killed anyone! But it's easy to see why the guy's so dangerous- he's more fit than most professional body builders, and he doesn't even have regular access to a gym or healthy foods. And yet, the guy went and wrote this book, and is letting us in on his secrets on how he did it. As far as I'm concerned, he's the man for that alone. I got this book to see what it is he all does, and to try it out for myself. Keep in mind that I'm not some kind of exercise maniac, though I do try and do 300 push ups, sit ups and leg lifts a night at the very least. But after doing just -one- of the Solitary rounds, I was sweating and my muscles felt hard for a good hour or two after I was done!

Solitary Fitness has tons of great information before and after the actual Solitary Fitness program. Bronson (who sometimes refers to himself as Bronco) tells you what stretches are important, how many of them to do and for how long. I know that stretching is important before working out, and I spend at least 20 minutes doing stretches before I lift weights or go over my martial arts move set, but some people don't get it, and Bronson drills it in your head how important they are. He then goes over how to work on specific muscles and single them out, which you'll be able to do quickly thanks to his instructions. The majority of exercises here involve stretching and resistance. At first, they might sound stupid because you can't imagine these getting you ripped, but they're there to prepare you for the bigger ones later on. And at the same time, this book isn't meant to get you looking like Arnie, who Bronson likes to pick on a lot here. No, Solitary Fitness is about changing your life style and getting you prepared for anything once you're fit. And because nearly every single muscle is covered in this book (even the muscles within your rear, and those in your genitals), you -will- be ready for anything. Bronson is a very educated man when it comes to fitness, and it shows just a few pages into the program here. He knows what he's talking about, from what each muscle does to what foods are best for you and why.

Some complain about how unorganized the book is, then try to use Bronson's status as 'just a criminal' as the excuse for that. He's not trying to make a professional exercise book. Bronson's writing style is good because you feel like he's actually talking to you directly, and not just listing steps and letting you figure the rest out with the pictures. I didn't find the book unorganized, though Bronson himself even makes fun here and there, saying that he should've put something in a section a few dozen pages before. But this print of the book, the one pictured here on Amazon, does have a few problems with the organization, and that's the publisher's fault for overlooking it. Some parts tell you to refer to the picture or chart below/above, when sometimes it's on the previous page, or you have to turn the page to see it. 'not Bronson's fault, but they should've caught this and fixed it just to help things out. Also, I've seen the first edition of this book, and it had better quality photos. In this print, they're VERY dark and sometimes it's hard to make out the muscle definition in the models. 'not a big deal, but if you can find the first version, go for that one. His great drawings look good still, and these help show you how to do some of the exercises as well, though they're also comical of course.

I've spent a lot of years lifting weights here and there, have 12 years of martial arts experience, and like to work out in my free time, but Solitary Fitness seems to be my calling for getting a harder, tougher body. You can do these exercises anywhere, anytime. The only things you'll need for some are things like a towel, cement block or a chair. And get this- a good portion of the book's opening is praise from several well-known athletes and sports figures. A champion boxer noted that when he said his inspiration was Bronson, that got edited from tv. Why? Because he's a criminal? The fact that Bronson's program reached a professional boxer shows you that this is the real deal. Get this book before it goes out of print again and share it with your friends. You won't be disappointed. I mean, there's a section called 'Solitary Cow Punch' for crying out loud. Don't you want to learn how to throw a punch strong enough to knock out a cow!?

Delivers as promised

Book is an excellent introduction to research design for qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods designs. It explains all the components of a research design and walks you through each one, inclding the literature review, research question and hypotheses. Also, the first chapter goes through the different theoretical perspectives from which reseach proceeds, so you can understand the different paradigms. It also has lots of models, examples and exercises to work through. I used this book for a research proposal, and it guided me through the whole thing. The proposal was well accepted. So, I definately recommend this for any student to learn about research or anyone interested in putting together a good proposal, or an instructor who wants a good core text.

In The Commons we wander the English countryside with the so-called mad peasant poet John Clare, just escaped from an Essex asylum and walking the more than eighty miles to his home in Helpston; we pick wild fruit with anarchist Henry David Thoreau, also newly escaped from jail (for not paying his poll tax); and we comb the English Lake District, undermining William Wordsworth’s proprietary claim upon it, with a host of authors of Romantic Guides and Tours.

Resisting enclosure with each word, tearing down (intellectual) property’s fencing, wandering in search of new commons, new spaces outside property’s exclusive and excluding domain—The Commons veers in and out of history to find spaces of linguistic hope. What we have named, in less inspired moments, “allusion,” “borrowing,” or even (pretentiously) “intertextuality” is just this fact that poetry proves again and again: our languages are common. Shared. Un-enclosable.

The Commons is another installment of what Collis has called (half in jest) “The Barricades Project”—a broadly based, historically ranging test of the old adage that “poetry is the revolutionary act par excellence.” It includes Anarchive (2005) and will eventually continue in The Red Album. The Commons includes an introduction to “The Barricades Project,” written by Collis’ collaborators Alfred Noyes and Ramon Fernandez.

Green and Free

In Vancouver recently I had the chance to meet poet and professor Steve Collis, author of a book of poetry I quite liked years back, ANARCHIVE, and now here comes its sequel, THE COMMONS--really more of a semi-sequel, even that dreaded word "prequel" since it takes place centuries before the Spanish Civil War setting of the earlier volume.

But neither book is bound by history in any but the most ad hoc and helpful ways. Here we encounter the British poet John Clare as he struggles to maintain his sanity in a time of increased privatization and its concomitant loss of freedom. Clare was mad, we take it, for good reason, with a Laingian sense of the real. As the public sphere shrinks, like shadows approached by the prick of noon, Clare's mental state correspondingly waxes and wanes. Around him predators assume strange shapes--geese, hatches, foundries. For Collis, the world of poetry is a place in which "the commons," a free place of exchange and mutual association, still maintains a parlous grip on imagination. I always like it when people use the expression "free reign" where we used to say, "free rein," perhaps because the age of riding horses has passed us by, while on the other hand more despots reign over us than ever, so we're familiar with the reign--"thievery governments" as Collis says in a poem later in the book. In any case he expands from Clare into a larger world of Romantic poets moving hither and yon in a tragic search for self expression in a world of centralized capital clotting together like cream in the sun.

With the English and Spanish milieux of his last two books, Stephen Collis is like Woody Allen laying down his favorite scenarios in European outfits. And maybe THE COMMONS isn't quite a gripping or involving as ANARCHIVE, but the pastoral always has a free and easy charm about it that some mistake for laissez-faire. Not so Steve Collis, who makes us hungry for more in this saga. His tutelary spirits here, Alfred Noyes and Ramon Fernandez, assure us that the poet will next take us to revolutionary Paris for THE RED ALBUM, and somewhere Scarlett Johanson is waiting for Woody's phone call telling her the part of Charlotte Corday is hers alone.

still the definitive word on the subject

I have been working in this field for more than 30 years. Even after all of this time, if I want to remind myself about how to explain an important concept, I go back to Falconer. By the time I completed my PhD, my fellow grad students and I agreed that "if you understand Falconer, you understand Quantitative Genetics". Even after all of these years, I still find this to be true.

Good Book, Pretty Old At This Point

It's a good intermediate book, and the 150 or so solved problems are very useful.

Although it is "Quantitative Genetics," there isn't any statistical genetics in here, which is pretty odd. Just a passing mention of things like chi square testing of the null hypothesis would be helpful. Maybe it's because this book was first published in 1960 and the 4th edition came out in 1996.

I happen to have the 1960 edition, and parts of it are unchanged. I compared the 1960 version to the 4th edition where the new one awkwardly referred to a recessive allele as a "gene." Well, that page had not been revised since 1960! A little editorial housekeeping would go a long way.

It's hard to give 5 stars to a $115 paperback that will end up in a zip lock bag with the pages falling out. And it's pretty thick at 450 pages, so the spine will definitely crack over time if you use it very much. Although I like the content, when I opened the box it was like getting socks at Christmas.

The genetics bible

Its almost useless to write a review for this book. If you're in genetics, then you know this book's reputation to be of the very highest order. It is THE introduction into quantitative genetics. I have it on my desk and use it as a reference constantly when trying to figure out evolutionary genetics and/or quantitative genetics papers.

Succinct, very readable and full of valuable research findings

This is an excellent introduction to the field of SLA, it is relatively short for such a broad field but little space is wasted. The book introduces topics such as the differences between L1 and L2 learning, the effects of individual differences on language learning (including age, personality, motivation, intelligence and identity), second language acquisition theories (including behaviorist, cognitive and social perspectives as well as the usual input vs output debates), and research on the differences between natural and classroom based learning environments as well as the usefulness of grammar instruction. The authors finish the book by looking at what research has to say about certain widely held language learning beliefs such as 'the younger the better' and so on.

I found this book both interesting and full of insights from research that can be applied practically as a language learner and teacher. Highly recommended.

A great book for anyone who teaches or assists in teaching languages...

Wow! This book is packed with important, in-depth, and applicable information about how people learn languages. If you are involved in teaching languages or simply have an interest in the subject, I highly recommend this book. I have only recently begun tutoring adult ESL (English as a Second Language) learners, and have been able to apply what I have learned to the tutoring sessions. Highly Recommended!

a very good beginner's book in SLA

This is one my favorite coursebooks in SLA. The book is helpful for those who begin to feel interested in SLA or for teachers who intend to teach a course in language learning. It's very comprehensive and easy to understand. Different opinions from studies on a same topic are offered. Most importantly, it offers fair comments on different theories. This 4th edition also offers good online resources for teachers to conduct discussions on relative topics.

Iain MacRury is Principal Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of East London. His previous publications include The Dynamics of Advertising (co-authored with Barry Richards and Jackie Botterill, 2000) and Buy This Book: Studies in Advertising and Consumption (co-edited with Mica Nava, Andrew Blake and Barry Richards, 1996).
