About the Author
Betty Waterton (1923-2012) was the author of nineteen children’s books, including the Quincy Rumpel novels and a number of well-loved picture books. Over the course of her writing career she traveled all over Canada giving readings to children. For many years she lived on Canada’s West Coast, where A Salmon for Simon, her first picture book, takes place.

Ann Blades is one of Canada’s leading illustrators. Her distinctive watercolors appear in many children’s books, including A Salmon for Simon, which won the Governor General’s Award for Illustration and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award, By the Sea: An Alphabet Book, which won the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Award, and A Dog Came, Too by Ainslie Manson. She is also the author and illustrator of Mary of Mile 18, for which she won the Canadian Library Association’s Book of the Year for Children Award. Ann returned to teaching in 2001 and now teaches kindergarten at an inner-city school in Surry, British Columbia.

Teaches compassion, respect, and love for nature

Simon has been trying to catch a salmon all summer long. When he finally has the opportunity to catch a salmon trapped in a hole made by clam digging, he decides the fish belongs back out in the ocean. How he makes the effort and succeeds in freeing the fish is inspiring to young readers. Within the story is a short, two-sentence description of the salmon cycle that readers can understand, and a description of the tidepool life. I'm so happy to see this book still in print! It was one of my son's favorite books when he was little. I highly recommend it to parents and teachers.

realistic teaching of love of nature

Agreeing with the previous review, I would add that Simon's perceptions, reactions, and actions are realistic for an 8 to 10 year old boy. Also admirable are the low-key presentation of Simon's determination and persistence--just as in the best folk tales he does what he has to do without any self-consciousness of heroism. The illustrations are very expressive but the perspective is a bit shallow--but this won't bother children.

About the Author
CG Somiah was the Comptroller and Auditor General of India from 1990 to 1996. He was the first Indian to be elected a member of the United Nations Board of Audit by the UN General Assembly in 1993. In 1995 he became the Chairman of the Board responsible for the audit of the UN, its many agencies across the world and the UN Peace Keeping Force. An enthusiastic tennis player as well as a regular golfer, CG Somiah has held many important posts in the Government of India, including Home Secretary and Central Vigilance Commissioner. He lives in Bengaluru with his wife, Indira and still enjoys his game of bridge.

Outstanding

This is one of the most candid accounts of an honest bureaucrat's challenging and illustrious career, a reflection of flawless professionalism, courage and endurance to withstand the pressures of being so honest in a largely corrupt system. Mr C.G.Somiah's first hand narration of his personal story in simple language stimulates thought and touches hearts.

I am amazed by his humility, simplicity and unbiased discharge of duty with the highest levels of intellectual and moral integrity and yet, a humane outlook in all his decisions.

The anecdotes in each chapter are splendid. Some are humorous and some are plain fearless expose of the corrupt system.

We had a hearty laugh at home when I read aloud the incident where Field Marshal (Retd) Cariappa hands over Mr Somiah a tie before letting him in for lunch at his residence. A very interesting first meeting of two illustrious Coorgs!

Playing tennis with his mother and winning the mixed doubles is a memory that he fondly remembers.

Starting from the one square centimeter photo of his wife Indira and the fairy tale that endures forever is perhaps one of the best facets of his personal life.

The fine accounts of his travels across the length and breadth of this country and also his visits abroad are full of energy and passion.

The case of tendu leaves makes interesting read, though not surprising. So is the case of his confrontation with the liquor lobby in Orissa. Despite the undue political pressures and unwarranted transfers, truth and integrity have ultimately triumphed for this courageous man.

His elevation to the position of Comptroller and Auditor General of India in 1990 was the pinnacle of a great career. Coorg had produced one more "General"!!

I finished reading this book on 12 th September and with joy and pride, I carefully preserved the copy in order to request for an autograph on it from Mr Somiah during my next visit to Bengaluru. I also jotted down some short questions for him, if I could get a few minutes of his time.

God had other plans for this noble man. On 13 th September, I learnt from the news that Mr C.G. Somiah was no more with us. I could not control my tears in office.

I plan to visit Mangalore during Christmas this year. I shall certainly visit the St Aloysius chapel, which he loved, and pray for his great soul.

Sir, you do not stand alone. I join the millions of Indians who stand in salute, in sincere thanks, gratitude and appreciation of your illustrious service to our Motherland.

The Importance of Being Honest

The Indian Administrative Service fascinates many young people. Most of them seem to be running after it for the power and social status it brings. But for a honest officer, the IAS can be a means to fight the cancer of corruption. C. G. Somiah in his book `The Honest Always Stand Alone' describes a variety of situations in his career in IAS to show how he maintained his honesty and tried to fight corruption though he had to suffer a loss of promotion for two years because of that. I found this book inspiring. The story of how Somiah reached the top of his profession overcoming complicated situations and tribulations without losing his integrity gives us the hope that there is still a place for ethical values in spite of the widespread existence of corruption.

GREAT HELP

this book helped me in the class and has a lot of examples and step by step. it also comes with a cheat sheet in the back of the book that way you dont have to keep looking through the chapters for the formula which was a great help and time saver

Simple

This is a very easy to understand textbook. I used it for a course I had previously taken at a different school and found it much easier than my previous textbook. Strangely, the chapters use almost the exact same answers for most of their problems. I suppose it's for simplicity, but it would have been nice to see a better variety. I feel like Chapters 8 and 10 could have been explained a little better though. Some of the answers to the extra problems, shown in the last few pages of the book, are incorrect. I'm not sure if this is a flaw for some books, or if it's a flaw for every book in the 10th edition. My professor verified the answers were incorrect. Otherwise, a good book! I wish I had bought this book instead of renting it, because it's just that helpful.

This book shows you step by step how to solve may of the math problems you encounter in nursing. I have been out of school for over 20 years and could not remember how to do many of the problems, but this book has helped me a great deal. If you are taking some type of math class for the health field, this book is for you.

More Cosmo-type BS

I bought this book because I like to check my friend's competition .... I expected to get a bunch of "be romantic/be a nice guy" BS advice, and I wasn't dissappointed. If you want to be taught how to act like a chump, and possibly get walked on like a doormat, then this book will help you. Otherwise, you're better off buying a book like "Nice Guys And Players", "The Machiavellian's Guide To Womanizing" or "How To Suceed With Women".
Women, whether they're Asian or not, operate in similar ways. You're not gonna find much in here that will help you-- unless of course you want to become the man who wines and dines the woman, while another guy wines and grinds her for you.

Terrific

Written by an intelligent sensitive Asian woman who displays understanding and wisdom. Full of practical advice, lots of quotes from Asian ladies, and good reading. The author is especially good on understanding and explaining the differences between varied Asian cultures and countries -- China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and the Philippines. Highly recommended.

Not bad overall, I guess

I found it hard to rate this book because the amount of new information you'll learn from this book really depends on your level of intelligence and social skills. A smart and educated guy who is already more or less skilled in the area of etiquette will find SOME useful information such as approriate table manners and rules for meeting family members in various Asian cultures, as well as how to recognize personality traits that are often attributed to many Asian women (such as being shy, demure and the very mistaken perception of Asian submissiveness)and see them for what they really are. On the other hand if you're the kind of guy whose intellect and/or etiquette skills are somewhat below average, this book will be a wealth of information and mandatory reading if you're serious about pursuing Asian women. Some advice that she gives really is a no-brainer, such as "Don't refer to Asians as 'Orientals'" or how when responding to her personals ad, don't say how much you love Asian women, or not asking a lady if she speaks English as an opening line, etc...DUH! Really! On the other hand, the author and the women she interviewed have must have encountered this sort of thing frequently or she wouldn't have felt the need to include this kind of advice in her book. And of course what's common sense to one person may be an entirely new way of thinking to another. And a lot of the advice she gives on how to be attractive to women and how to approach them really are applicable to women generally -- Asian or not.
My only other criticism about this book is regarding the Asian women she interviewed, and how representative some of their views were about Asian women in general. I was particularly astounded at how many of the women, when describing their ideal man, mentioned the exceptionally high income levels of the man they sought. The author claims to have interviewed a variety of Asian women of a broad age range and who were both immigrants of many Asian nationalities as well as Asian Americans. Yet this kind of information makes me wonder if a very high number (if not most) of these women were twenty and thirtysomething Americanized Asian women living and working in upscale New York, which would't be too surprising since these are the ones she probably knows most. It also would have been nice to have just a bit more of this kind of information about each of the women she quotes since she relies on a LOT of these and would have enabled me to put an opinion in perspective. Yes, Education is valued in just about every Asian culture and the more education and higher income you have, the better your chances of attracting a quality woman. But I know of two guys who are married to Fillipinas, one who works as a mechanic, the other a roofer.
I really would like to have given this book three and a HALF stars, but this option wasn't allowed. All in all, this book is adequate and informative and yes, I would recommend it.
