Not worth the money

The title of the book is a stretch. I bought it to learn "Building Design Strategies". Of the 130 pages, only 30 pages talked about strategies, the rest, is a collection of findings from other people's research papers. It should be Titled Daylight and Health.

The book is not worth the money! Wish I could return it for a refund.

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

This book overextends on a topic that is not as important as the man with the PhD who wrote it would like to think. It is an obsessive overkill on a subject that noone really cares about anymore because good lighting/daylighting design is already part of the DNA understanding of just about everyone. Everyone knows and has accepted a long time ago that daylighting is an integral part of architecture, health, etc. The book doesn't read well, and it is clear that the author is interested only in creating publications throughout his career on a splinter subject in architecture & design that does not really have anything to do with the "big picture" anymore. What is next? Perhaps the author will move into "Curtains, Architecture & Health". Everyone knows that curtains are an extremely important element to good lighting design. There are sheer & opaque curtains that have both aesthetic & lighting control properties that are valuable to the health of occupants in a given space. Good curtain design requires extensive but simple calculations of transmittance & reflectance in order to determine their controlling affects on the design lighting/daylighting scheme for a given space so that only the correct and appropriate curtains are chosen for any particular space and its occupants. Or, how about the door hinge? Door hinges are very important to a healthy design, without them we would not be able to close our doors and protect ourselves from the unhealthy elements. Good door hinge design is to be calculated using the rotational velocity calculation that I have created specifically for correct sizing. Or, how about pillows? Pillows are important to have on a bed. Without them, we would not be supporting the natural contours of our neck & back during the period of human rest that is called sleep. A good pillow design requires extensive but simple contour calculations & sizing so that only the right amount of pillow is included in our design. Or, how about lamp shades. Lamp Shades are very important to a healthy lighting design. Without them we would not be able to take advantage of healthy diffuse lighting effects that good lamp shade design provides. Without them we would have excessive glare, and therefore become blinded by the light. The list of possible splinter subjects are endless for this author. Everyone knows that being close to daylighting is healthy. Who has not desired an office space next to a window with a view throughout the last 100 years of history? Daylighting and good health is intrinsic and therefore does not require the extensive overview that this book seeks to provide. With the advent of LEED, BIM, and other movements in A/E/C, perhaps the author could focus more on how daylighting strategies save energy, reduce carbon emissions, and save people money. I'm sure the hard data on such a topic, with the current trends, would be of high value to readers, rather than the nonsense in this book.

A must read for all local and regional planners

If it had not been for this book, I would not have passed the AICP test. The format covers a wide range of planning issues from the history of planning to citizens workshops and the basic process of planning. All planners should have this book in their reference library.

The Green Book/Bible--second edition

Against common sense, I used the second edition of this volume as a textbook in a graduate course I once taught at Alfred University--The Politics of Planning. I always thought it made sense to introduce students to the nitty gritty of local planning before expanding on the politics of the process.

This book, sometimes styled as "The Green Book" and, at other times, as "The Green Bible" provided my students the background on what local planning is like as a process. Once they understood that, we went into a detailed discussion of the politics of local planning.

The introductory section provides context for the subject, including a history of city planning. The second part of the book examines "District, Environmental, and Transportation Planning." Part Three looks at urban design and land use regulation. Next, Part Four, Economic and social planning. This area is somewhat more controversial. Social elements in planning? Part Five considers management, finance, and information. Finance and budgeting, obviously, are critical elements in planning. Part Six has just one chapter--focusing in the values of planners.

For students who might not be invested in the logistics and details of city planning, this book can be daunting. However, its value is revealed by the fact that my students responded well to it, addressed it seriously, and learned from it.

All in all, a fine volume, even though it is now, clearly, dated to some extent.

About the Author
Joseph R. Dominick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1970. He taught for four years at Queens College of the City University of New York before coming to the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia where, from 1980 to 1985, he served as head of the Radio-TV-Film Sequence. Dr. Dominick is the author of three books in addition to The Dynamics of Mass Communication and has published more than thirty articles in scholarly journals. From 1976 to 1980, Dr. Dominick served as editor of the Journal of Broadcasting. He has received research grants from the National Association of Broadcasters and from the American Broadcasting Company and has consulted for such organizations as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Chemical Society.

Great book on Mass Communication

I used this book for a class. If you want to learn about popular forms of mass communication then I recommend this book. It puts it in laymen terms. I don't work in the mass comm industry but consume mass comm greatly. This made me understand the inner workings of the devices of communication I use on the daily. It also helped me see how technical mass communication is and how departmentalized and divided it is. I also learned why it's so hard for musical artists to make money in entertainment. I never knew their money was divided so many ways between so many entities when it comes to their albums and songs. This is a great book for any one who is interested in Mass Communications and wants to learn the basics and theory behind what it is and about popular forms like radio, TV, advertising, movies, etc.

Great textbook, rental is good deal

I bought this book for my son through Amazons semester rental deal, which was less than half the cost of buying it at his school. He enjoys the book and it has helped him get A's on all his tests for his Media class. He says it is up to date and interesting; the inside cover has a pic of Prince William's & Catherine's wedding. The book covers all media from its history up to current blogs & media issues through 2012. We are pleased with the rental deal, they send us a prepaid envelope when we are done with it and then we ship it back, saving us the hassle of re-selling it. I agree with the other reviewer about price, all text books are ridiculously over priced.

Adorable

Gianna is kind of stupid for not believing Franco about the crazy ex-girlfiend, but this is Helen Bianchin book, so that is the norm. I adored this book because you get glimpses into what Franco is thinking and there were bits and moments where Franco was so sweet and loving to Gianna, like in the beginning when she is about to leave and he asks, "Are you forgetting something?" and kisses her. Swoon!

Also there was a funny little side romance between the argumentative grandparents. Gianna, unlike other heroines in HP books, actually had a friend with whom to interact and a job so that was great to see. Usual HB's heroines are usually so closed off from the rest of the world.

The heroes are the reason why I love HP books so much and this book showed the hero's loving actions more so of course I love it. Newer HP books definitely show a little bit into what the heroes' thoughts (more I would say!) and more sweet moments between the couple instead of fighting or having sex. I'd wish Helen would stop w/ the crazy ex-girlfriends though.

A less interesting version of "The Marriage Arrangement"

The premise was interesting enough and I liked an earlier version of this book "The Marriage Arrangement" by the same author, but the h in this version killed the book for me. For a supposedly successful business woman she was insipid, insecure and completely unable or unwilling to communicate with her husband. The crazy Ex was blatantly lying to the h and all the h could do is sit and sulk instead of bringing the issue up to her husband. In "The Marriage Arrangement" the Ex was much smoother and the h was much more upfront about her feelings which made the book much more believable and enjoyable. Whereas in this version both the h and Ex were just TSTL (i.e. why would the Ex claim that the antique desk which the H bought in the h presence was actually meant for her when that can be so easily disproved and why in the world would the h believe her????), which made me just not care about either of them. Not sure why the H would be in love or even in lust w either of them. The crazy Ex leaving stupid h text messages and stupid h stewing over the messages and not talking to the H does not a book make. Don't bother. Read "The Marriage Arrangement" instead.

disappointed 50th special book.

Gianna is a beautifully successful business woman, with a fabulous marriage to a passionate and sweet loving husband. Yet she is deeply insecure in their amazing love, constantly second-guessing Franco's every word and actions. Gianna has a beautiful love story, in and out of bed, but the whole story grinds on her waspish unpleasant verbal smacks to her gentle husband. Seriously. The ENTIRE story.

The frequent sparring with the spiteful ex, whilst good dialogue, fell over to lack of strong action. Come on. This is a seriously dynamic, high powered, wealthy couple here and yet the stalking, harassment and invasion of privacy, functions, shopping and mobile messages, could not be swiftly addressed. Bianchin's construction of deranged ex's is shallow and highly unbelievable.

This book failed in a spectacular way to celebrate Bianchin's 50th book special. Simply boring with dull witted wife, sluttish ex, one star for the faithful but useless husband, zip to the aggressively nasty matriach grandmother (supposely funny) and another star for the fiesty patriach grandfather.

Probably as good as possible--without being intrusive

The author well restrained himself from "digging into the painful childhood" that produced such an unusually remote "negator of impulses." He brought out the positive aspects of Johns personality--his ability to laugh at himself and not always to take himself too seriously. "His work is a constant negation of impulses" said the critic..."wouldn't you say so Jasper?" "NO" says Jasper, laughing. Jasper can laugh. That is nice. The author respected his need for privacy in his personal life. He presented a very difficult, complex personality with dignity, humor, and good taste.

Novelists have always loved artists, and artists have always loved novelists. They love and admire the other's talent, but--most important--they are not competitors. Crichton's love of Johns' work certainly comes forth, and Johns' seemed flattered that a best-selling novelist, and not an art professor, wanted to do a book on him. That mutual admiration underlies why this is such a solid book.

Into the heart of creation

I own six books on Jasper Johns (monographs, catalogues of exhibitions) and this one is undoutedly the best. The illustrations are numerous and of a good quality, however this is not your coffee-table type of book: you do want to read the text, which, through numerous interviews and essays, manages to give the best analysis available on the master's art. Especially interesting are the dialogues between Chrichton (himself a collector of Johns's works) and the artist. This is a book that often provides unique insight into the artist's creative process; Chrichton opens many doors and it is up to the reader/art lover to step in and discover Johns's mysterious world.
