Great guide to a even greater game.

Excellent guide. I've beaten Dino Crisis on numerous occasions as it's one of my favorite games. I wanted the guide for collection purposes, but mainly because of the mixing table that this guide contains. Despite several completions of the game, the mixing of aid items in Dino Crisis has always been a mystery to me. It's not well explained in game, and it's quite a bit more complicated than what it appears. After reading this guide, I learned so many things I didn't know in regards to mixing items. Things you wouldn't know without a tremendous amount of trial and error to discover the formula to the system. I wasn't even successful at finding an online explanation or chart for it anywhere.

All in all, Prima's guide for Dino Crisis is extremely detailed, well written, and helpful for anyone still wanting to tackle this game. And from what I've read, it's superior to competitor guides in every way. Especially for the mixing chart. It's also a nice collector piece for anyone a fan of this amazing game.

This book told me the information that I needed to know to be successful at the DinoCrisis game, and told me what options I had to look forward too without telling me what options I needed to take. Anyone who likes to use strategy guides, especially for old games, would love this book.

About the Author
Patrick Lambe is a widely respected knowledge management consultant based in Singapore. His Master’s degree from University College London is in Information Studies and Librarianship, and he has worked as a professional librarian, as a trainer and instructional designer, and as a business manager in operational and strategic roles. He has been active in the field of knowledge management and e-learning since 1998, and in 2002 founded his own consulting and research firm, Straits Knowledge, with a partner. He is former President of the Information and Knowledge Society, and is Adjunct Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Patrick speaks and writes internationally on knowledge management, and has conducted a number of taxonomy projects, usually as an integral part of larger knowledge management initiatives. He is the author of The Blind Tour Guide: Surviving and Prospering in the New Economy (Times, 2002). His knowledge management writings are posted at www.greenchameleon.com.

Worth the money

My two co-reviewers appear to have a vastly greater experience in this field, and I was pretty much flying blind when I plunked down $60+ USD for a paperback. The other reviewers have a pretty good opinion of this book, and many of the alternative books suggested did not get great reviews. However, the other reviewers sound like experts and I wasn't sure the book would be useful to me, a beginner trying to get a maximum amount of understanding of taxonomy for a minumum investment of time and money.

They were right about the value of Organising Knowledge. I don't want "Taxonomy for Dummies" and O. K. is not that book, but it CAN serve the same need. If you are new to the field, or even if you have been doing this work in your company for several years and want to know more of what your company's taxonomy-Jedi Knights are talking about, start here. (If you are an expert, read the other reviews and make your decision.)

It is becoming my business to set up wikis for people. Reading Organising Knowledge is helping me to think about how to create the basic structures, rather than starting with randomly-selected keywords and hoping everyone will think of the same descriptors.

This isn't light reading. However, it's only difficult in that the material is new to me. The writing is clear and I'm not having any trouble following, if my brain would only not go off on so many side trail along the lines of "Oh, I could do THAT for this client..." or "NOW I see what those other clients were talking about..."

So: from the newbie seats--good book.

Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies Matter!

If I follow the writing principle of bottom line and idea first then I would have to say Patrick Lambe's "Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and Organisational Effectiveness" is a five-star publication. Using the four-point scale Study, Read, Skim, Bin as a guide to the effort that might be invested, this book definitely warrants a Study rating. So what's so good about the book?

Well judging by my margin scribbles and underlining lots! First it is an entertaining, coherent and easy read. Patrick's assertion that - "If taxonomies classify, describe and map knowledge domains, then taxonomy work is made up of the things we must do to achieve that outcome: listing, creating and modifying categories, standardising, mapping, representing, discovering native vocabularies and categories, negotiating common terms" (p. 11) - resonates with me and is an example of the practical flavour of the book. Similarly I found Patrick's taxonomy forms - lists, trees, hierarchies, poly-hierarchies, matrices, facets, and system maps - to be a useful classification and a guide to why some taxonomies fail and others succeed.

I must admit that I had never considered in any detail how our reasoning patterns impact on our taxonomies. Most of us reason by beginning in the middle and generalising upwards and differentiating downwards. It's an interesting insight which explains why so many tree structures don't work. I suspect we like tree structures because they are easy to understand and they at first impose order onto chaos.

I do think one or two longbows are drawn with some of the examples in the book - the Victoria Climbie child abuse discussion being a case in point. The archetype typology - a special type of taxonomy - is another. Despite this the examples serve to show in a practical way how a well designed taxonomy can help in knowledge discovery and knowledge articulation.

Perhaps one of the most interesting insights in the book is the notion of taxonomies as boundary objects. A well designed taxonomy can allow different groups of people to find common ground and therefore communicate. One example is communication between amateur ornithologists and professional zoologists. Another is communication between economists and health professionals through the International Classification of Diseases taxonomy.

Patrick signed my copy on the 14th of August 2007, and wrote the following comment on the front page - "For Graham in the hope you will find this useful!" Well I've skimmed the book more times than I can remember, I've studied it twice, and read it twice (both in a single sitting)! The book is very useful and should be on the shelf of anyone who professes to be a knowledge management practitioner. In my view it should also be mandatory reading for students of library science, knowledge management and information management. I'm certainly convinced that taxonomies matter!

Fascinating and useful insights into taxonomies

Patrick Lambe provides excellent insights and tips for anyone facing a project to design and implement an enterprise content management system. Through many thought-provoking examples, he makes it clear that a collection of unstructured data is only as good as the effort that went into its organization, and he demonstrates the critical need for collaborating with the content providers and consumers to understand their thought processes and expectations. Some of the examples include some very uncomfortable lessons about the dangers of badly conceived taxonomies. He also makes the subject very interesting by placing the art of taxonomy in its historical context, showing us how various dynamic individuals developed classification systems that are now widely deployed and have an impact on everyday life. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in the implications of the enormous amount of digital information accumulating at an ever-increasing rate.

Classic Module

Dungeon magazine ranked this among the thirty greatest DnD adventures of all time, so I decided to purchase a copy and run it for my group. I have been very impressed by the quality of the storyline in the module -- the UK division of TSR did an absolutely fantastic job. I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in some old school gaming.

Great module from the golden years of D & D

This AD & D module is for character levels 1-3. The setting is the "haunted" house that sits high on a cliff overlooking the fishing town of Saltmarsh. Ghostly happenings and mysterious lights appearing from the house have kept people away from the house for many years. But the house really isn't "haunted" - instead, it is made to APPEAR that it's haunted by smugglers who are operating from the house and have tried to scare people away (sounds kinda like a Scooby Doo mystery). This module has a good story, illustrations, and above all a steady level of dread. It's not incredibly hard to figure out the "secret" of Saltmarsh. The second part of the module has to do with seizing the smugglers' vessel. Thinking and tactfulness are essential. This adventure is one of my personal favorites from the early '80s. I won't reveal too much, I'll just say that it's a great two-part adventure through a "haunted" house and its cellar with lots of twists and turns and surprises. I think you'll enjoy going through this module if you enjoy the old school Dungeons & Dragons of yesteryear. What I'm referring to is the way the game was in the '70s and early '80s - the golden age of Dungeons & Dragons. That period of time had the best modules and the game's popularity was at its peak. I highly recommend this module (if you can obtain a copy).

In the very early 1980s, contemporary D&D modules typically troubled themselves with story lines only long enough to get you underground; once you were in the dungeon, you slogged through hours of room-to-room combat and hidden pitfalls. The only thinking required was "How do I kill this thing?" Sure that was fun for a while, but this adventure illustrated that our gaming brethren in the UK were taking D&D to a more sophisticated level. This is definitely a thinking player's (and DM's) adventure with clues to be digested and a plot to be figured out; it gets high marks for innovation.

That said, the adventure is actually somewhat lacking in many ways. Yes, it lays out a plot with a twist or two, but the secret is not really very sinister, or even that well concealed. The "dungeon" portion of the adventure, including encounter descriptions, maps, and NPCs are uninspired and the designers really left far too much up to the DM. What you get are reminders that the DM will have to develop so-and-so NPCs and encounters or come up with this-or-that villain strategy just when you're hoping that they'll give you something meaty to dig your creativity into. It seems to be a lot to lay on a person who spent $6.50 of their hard-earned paper route money to play this adventure back in 1982; especially considering that at least 4 pages of this module were wasted on full page illustrations and useless visual aids. Still, if the DM is willing and able to flesh this thing out, it should lead to one of the better D&D experiences from that era.

This book gives a fantastic overview of concepts in robotics. However, it is littered with typos. Also, the diagrams are difficult to read. They appear to have been made in Excel in color, but are printed in this book in black and white.

I am very disappointed that the print copy is in black and white. This book contains numerous graphs and charts that require color differentiation to understand. Also a warning for instructors- this is NOT an introductory text. Background theory and foundational concepts are glossed over or not addressed at all.

A Helpful Primer on Engaging Culture

After a brief introduction, Ashford demonstrates how views on culture vary. Just as a fish can’t describe water, so do we have difficulty understanding our own view on culture until someone points out distinctions between positions. In Chapter Two, Ashford explains his vision for a theology of culture, following the pattern of the biblical narrative through three movements: Creation, Fall, and Redemption/New Creation. These categories provide the rubric for much of Ashford’s academic work.

In the third chapter, the topic is vocation as it relates to culture. For many, vocation means the work one does to earn wages. However, Ashford’s vision is richer and fuller, encompassing various aspects of life like family, career/work, church, etc. We are called to more than just a career, we are called to honor God in every aspect of our lives. Chapter Four outlines six case studies on engagement with culture, which helps prove Ashford’s position is valid. He uses Augustine of Hippo, Balthasar Hubmaier, Abraham Kuyper, C.S. Lewis, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Francis Schaeffer as examples. Although none of these examples are expounded thoroughly, Ashford gives sufficient information to portray them accurately and to point the readers on to do further investigation for themselves.

Chapters Five through Nine all deal with particular spheres that Christians should seek to influence for Christ. In these five chapters, Ashford discusses engagement with the Arts, Sciences, Politics and the Public Square, Economics and Wealth, and Scholarship and Education. None of these chapters is a final analysis, but they do provide a helpful introduction and a place to begin the process of discovery.

Ashford concludes the book discussion the Christian Mission, which entails living all of life under Christ’s lordship and seeking to help demonstrate his Lordship in all creation. This a grand theme that permeates Scripture and pushes the Church outside her walls and into her communities for the glory of the Lord.

n about 130 pages of content, Ashford manages to provide a solid overview of a broad sweep of Christian thought. Besides the question of the relationship between the Law and the Gospel, there are few questions more significant to Christian theology than how Christians should relate to cultures which are, most often throughout history, not distinctly Christian. Ashford’s book is a beginner’s field guide on the topic.

This is the sort of book I would recommend as a gift as a High School or College graduation gift. It’s the sort of thing I wish I had read earlier in life. It would also be a useful tool for pastors seeking to help expose an inquiring parishioner to meaningful cultural engagement or to help someone break out of a pattern of cultural isolationism.

As Western culture becomes increasingly post-Christian, learning to be a Christian minority will become more and more significant. Ashford’s book will help someone make a beginning step in that direction.

A must read for christian's in college or soon to go off to college

Dr. Ashford, as usual, does a masterful job navigating through discussions that sometimes can get tense. I will be giving a copy of this book to every high school graduate in our churches from now on. It's a great resource to know how to be well prepared for college from a spiritual standpoint.

The delivery of this book was delayed and it was also ripped in a few places. This caused me to miss one of my school assignments. Great book to read still.

Such a great read!

I really do love this book, I loved how both characters are facing their own problems but are also strong! I loved Matt and Daphne. A princess who is so strong willed I truly loved her character. Over all I loved the plot and the story, to be honest i felt that the end was rushed a bit, but it's okay because it was such a satisfying ending. The final break through when she just walked off was so satisfying.

Short and good...

Got through it within hours. Once I started, I couldn't stop and that's a great story in my head. It was short, sweet and there was never a moment where I didn't feel like the characters were not developed enough or the story had plot holes. I truly enjoyed it and will be picking up more titles from Mia Carson.
