Gritty and realistic

More historical fiction than fantasy, you will not find any magic swords or sorcery in this gritty and realistic story of Guenevere and Britian after the death of Arthur. When the story begins, Guenevere is already middle aged, and Britian is on the brink of chaos. As the story progresses we learn of the maturing of Guenevere as a person and as a queen.
The novel starts off fast and furious with battles and betrayals. Then it settles down into a serious character study as it builds towards a strong and satisfying climax. Sometimes slow, but always interesting, this was worthwhile reading.

Interesting and unique portrayal of Guinevere!

A few months ago, I read a novel called Queen of Camelot by Nancy Mckenzie, a recreation of the King Arthur story that centers on Guinevere. I thought that the retelling was very interesting and showed Guinevere as a flesh and blood, three-dimensional, kind woman and not the treacherous, adulteress that is shown in the original story. Beloved Exile, however, shows quite a different take on Guinevere, one of an ambitious, treacherous woman that would do anything for survival and to rule as queen with results as interesting as the one in Queen of Camelot. Guinevere is the Medieval/fantasy Scarlett O'Hara in this retelling. After King Arthur dies, Guinevere, along with Lancelot and Gareth, tries to bring Camelot to its previous glory, but things don't turn out that way, to say the least. Instead, she becomes a Saxon slave, and her struggles has just begun. But Guinevere is an intelligent, scheming woman, and she will do just about anything to reign again. There are various twists throughout the novel.

Beloved Exile takes quite a departure from the original King Arthur tale and the results are incredible. Parke Godwin gives Guinevere the sort of depth and layers that is absent in King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. And the anti-heroine here is also a departure from Queen of Camelot. Both of these novels show a very interesting portrayal of Queen Guinevere in very different ways and I cannot decide which one is the best one of the two. In this adaptation, Guinevere is an unsympathetic protagonist, but has enough complexity to make her compelling at the same time. That is why I compare her to Scarlett O'Hara, for she made me feel the same way when I read Gone with the Wind. This Guinevere is very interesting indeed. I just loved the complexity and many dimensions of this character. Mr. Godwin has created a wonderful and unique portrayal of this classic character. And he added gothic undertones to boot! I cannot recommend this gem enough!

One of the very best portraits of Guinevere

This is a worthy sequel to the exciting "Firelord." It tells the story of the rest of Guinevere's life after Arthur's death, and she is even more of a vivid and strong personality than she was in that enthralling novel. Godwin's account of her captivity as a Saxon slave, and her adaptation to that way of life, is purely imaginative, but who could mind? It relates a sensitive and entertaining account of how this proud queen grows to maturity in her adjustment to a jarring change in her fortunes. Guinevere has never seemed more real, alive and captivating than in these pages.You can well believe that a woman this remarkable has captured popular imagination for 1500 years. Someone, please--put this book back into print! It deserves it.

About the Author
Larry Jeffus is a welder with over 55 years of welding experience, and he has his own well-equipped welding shop. In his welding career he has passed many welding certification tests in a wide variety of processes, positions, and on many different material types and thicknesses. Larry has provided welding and professional consulting services locally, nationally, and internationally to major corporations, small businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges, and individuals. He is a Life Member of the American Welding Society. Larry Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for 12 years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He served as a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helped establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

If you are serious about welding

As far as I can find, this is currently the primary reference book about welding. A beginner or do-it-yourself welder (like yours truly) needs little else to get started. It is lavishly illustrated and referenced and has all of the information one needs to understand what welding is about and how to make great welds. Although this field enjoys rapid progress and significant technological development on an almost daily basis, the book has mostly up to date information as of 2010.

I have good quality AC/DC/Pulse MMA, MIG and TIG equipment and have used it very successfully over the last couple of years, even though I have only a minimum of formal training (2 semesters of 2 hours a week in a metalwork shop to make us into "real" engineers! Three decades ago!). I can testify to the value of this book in making full use of this fairly complex equipment, which requires significant investment of time and money. It presents not just dry technical data but also the experience and insight of a master welder in easily digestible form as well as the many tricks and tips needed to master a difficult manual art. I cannot comment on how useful it would be in a classroom setting but I found the questions and exercises to be quite handy for setting up the equipment and testing myself in the basic skills needed.

The book is also very enjoyable and for those who are interested in this field it can provide hours and hours of entertainment. The writing is clear and precise and the layout and graphics are gorgeous. There are reams and reams of historical and anecdotal information and I would have no hesitation in placing this in a "waiting room" or "coffee table book" situation as a general good read.

The one quibble I have is that the book is very USA-centric, as of course it has to be give the background of the author and the intended audience. It does however provide full metric conversions for all important values and most tables have metric columns as well as the imperial units the author is obviously used to. So this quibble should not stop potential readers from acquiring this valuable, interesting and useful book especially as at the moment one cannot find anything even approaching it in depth and quality from SI Unit countries.

Reference Book I will use for a long time to Come!

This particular book is the text in the welding courses I have been taking this year. I wanted my own copy since the school does not let the books leave the classroom. I was impressed with the book already and wanted one of my own and found it here in the used section. Got the book for about half the price of a new one and the one I got looks like it was never opened. I have learned a lot from this book and will keep it as a reference as I progress to my welding projects. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about welding or already knows how to weld but needs a reference book. We can't all keep the entire contents of this book in our heads. When memory fails, it's in this book. About the only thing that isn't covered in here is underwater welding procedures.

Great information for a novice!

I'm a "moderate" beginner and needed to know more, this book is a wealth of information for me. Experience will teach me alot more but the fundamentals are explained clearly here and has helpful illustrations. The book arrived sooner than expected and was in nearly new condition- a real bargain!

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) TEST CHANGES:

The SHSAT is changing! If you are taking the Fall 2017 SHSAT Exam, you should be aware of the following changes so you can properly prepare for the exam. The old SHSAT test comprised of two sections: verbal and math. The verbal section included five scrambled paragraphs, followed by ten logical reasoning questions followed by 5 reading comprehension passages. The math section included 50 multiple choice questions. The time limit for the exam was 150 minutes.

So... what are the new changes you should be aware of?

• The new time limit for the SHSAT exam is now 180 minutes. (30 minutes more than the old SHSAT exam)

• NO MORE SCRAMBLED PARAGRAPHS.

• NO MORE LOGICAL REASONING QUESTIONS.

• Verbal section is renamed to the English Language Arts (ELA) section.

• There are 57 questions per section and only 47 out of 57 questions in each section will be scored. 10 questions are field test items which will not count toward the students score.

• The ELA section will include 20 revising and editing questions along with 6 reading passages.

• The math section will include 5 grid-in questions

• All multiple choice questions will have 4 answer choices instead of 5.

I purchased the first edition of the book in September and my daughter received admission into Stuyvesant High School for Fall of 2016. I am writing this review for two reasons.
1)My daughter found the practice exams in this book to be very useful and we are excited for her to start Stuyvesant High School.
2)Her brother will be taking the exam next year, and we just purchased the second edition and I have to say I am very happy in what they are offering. My son wants to attend Bronx Science because he is interested in one of their programs. Evidently, Argo Brothers offers free live test support, so I decided to fill out their form on the website regarding a few questions my son needed further help in, and I received a call from Michael, who is a tutor for this company literally within 20 minutes, and he guided my son through those questions. I must say I am very impressed they have this support feature.
If you’re preparing for the specialized high school exam, this book is a no brainer, hands down one of the best books to use to prepare for the shsat exam. I hope my son will be able to score high enough for Bronx Science, I had him start early because this exam is very intensive.  I would also recommend using the live support feature, if anyone has any difficulties on a problem.

This book is great for its price. My brother has been using this book and I can tell he is becoming far more confident than he was just a few months ago. This is certainly not an easy test to do well on! The practice questions in this book are great; actually some of the questions really make you think. If you want a mix of realistic practice exams get this book and probably the Kaplan’s. Barron’s book is way too easy and is not realistic on the level of difficulty.

Though the latest book from Nobel Prize-winning Pamuk (Istanbul, Snow) is a standard late-career essay collection, it makes clear the reasons behind the Turkish author's acclaim. Eschewing flash and flourish, Pamuk's style is plain, simple and persuasive-but therein lies its subtle power, well represented over more than 75 pieces divided into sections like "Living and Worrying" and "Politics, Europe, and Other Problems of Being Oneself." Self-reflection and cultural evolution emerge often as twin themes, as in his consideration of the Thousand and One Nights: "In those days, young Turks like me who considered themselves modern viewed the classics of eastern literature as one might a dark and impenetrable forest." These concerns lead naturally to political considerations, such as his conclusion that "the lies about the war in Iraq and... secret CIA prisons have so damaged the West's credibility in Turkey... it is more and more difficult for people like me to make the case for true western democracy in my part of the world." There's humor as well; in "Giving Up Smoking," a smoking cab driver begs Pamuk's pardon: "He was opening the window. 'No,' I said, 'keep it closed. I've given up smoking.'" Also included are musings on his own books and a short story, "To Look Out the Window." Disarmingly honest, Pamuk refuses to give in to melodrama or stylistic quirks, giving his feeling and frustration crystalline clarity and lasting weight.

Though critics agreed that the pieces were uneven, they were completely divided over which essays were the best. They also differed over Maureen Freely’s translation: some praised her smooth, conversational rendering, while others considered it too loose. Other Colors is not intended as an introduction to Pamuk’s work. Readers who have appreciated his brilliant, powerful fiction will enjoy peeking behind the curtain, but those unfamiliar with his work should start with one of his novels.

Other Colors? Think Rainbow

Not a moment or detail of life and living appears to pass Orhan Pamuk by without notice. This collection is breathtaking, both in terms of the wide range of topics he tackles and how easily he transitions between what might otherwise be considered mundane vs. majestic moments. The glue here is that Pamuk brings an incredible eye and humanity to everything he touches, leaving little to get lost in translation. Few writers that I have come across over the years capture the texture and tone of those often simple daily scenes more sparingly, vividly and memorably. Fewer still write as though literally every single word on every page matters. Here, they do, in the hands of someone who clearly loves everything about putting pen to paper. You can't help but read a book like this and savor the experience. What a joy--I finished it only a few days ago and I'm already looking forward to re-reading.

An outstanding book, one I parceled off in reading for as long as i could because it is such a fine piece of writing. The Nobel Address was particulary moving but for that matter, the entire book was. I look forward to the next publication of Mr. Pamuk's and only regret I could not hear and seem him at Stanford University a few days ago.

this is a must read and collection book to pass on our kids.

I have always been interested in the dark area of science and spirituality, the explanation of why we are here and who thinks our thoughts is it our brain or our mind? what makes us move and think? where's that energy coming from and who created it, who is in my mind and why we think what we think?

This book covers these questions and more from a scientific point of view but from a more open minded and advanced scientific thinking. The quantum mechanics has opened a new door of knowledge to understand many mysterious and unknown events in life. Mr. Mensky goes deep into the many questions, and answers with the help of Everett's many worlds interpretation giving a fresh breath of air to the old mechanistic and materialistic scientific point of view.

This books asks and unveils many unknown subjects that even some day to day people (non scientists) have never even asked themselves.

If you want to understand and increase your knowledge in regards to life, who we are, why certain things happen without explanation and in synchronicity as if someone of high intelligence is controlling our every day lives and how we can take control of it, you should read this book and pass it on to your kids and young audience.

beware that you need to have some basic scientific knowledge, since this knowledge is a bridge between the materialistic scientific knowledge of touching and seeing to believe and prove and the spiritual higher worlds world.
