This books fulfills at least three needs and fulfills them at a very high standard... it expands the body of Ch'an poetry available in English.... it provides an account of the Ch'an religious tradition.... the translations are graceful.

Charles Egan's presentation does a real service, providing the latest perspectives rather than a rehash of traditional, received accounts. His translations, which form the heart of this book, read smoothly and well. The introduction and the annotations are very well done and make this anthology one to be enjoyed, savored, and learned from.

Charles Egan is associate professor of Chinese at San Francisco State University, where he is also the director of its Chinese program. He has published extensively on the development of Chinese poetic genres and is a frequent translator.

The best in many years!

These are truly state-of-the-art translations--simple, graceful, elegant, profound. I also want to commend Egan for the notes at the end of the book. They provide the essential in scholarly apparatus, but even more, give valuable interpretations for the zen practitioner. I have been collecting translations of zen poetry for twenty years and this is unquestionably the finest anthology of zen poems in English I have seen. Not just good; this book is superb!

Simplicity at its best

This book is a real treasure. 190 Chinese poems from the years 618 to 1644, 16 illustrations (mostly detailed views of paintings by Charles Chu), 55 pages of helpful introduction and 100 pages of detailed explanatory notes by the translator.
It is something to dip into again and again to cleanse one's palate and refresh one's view. It has joined my short list of essential dharma books to grab in case I have to evacuate my home or begin a journey of ten thousand miles…
