Totally Kawaii!!

This is a great book for all kawaii (Japanese for cute) fans. Or people who want to know what it is. It takes you to Japan's manga and anime festivals. The shops with Hello Kitty, even a giant airplane with Hello Kitty on it. Food prepared cartoon style. It also show cases several kawaii artists and what influences them. This is well worth the money.

This is a really nice book!

This is a really nice book!!! I was a little concerned it might just be a short little thing but it has really good info and illustrations/photos. I definitely recommend it to people who are interested in learning more about the subcultures in japan as well. I did a project on Lolita Fashion in my fashionomics class last year and I really wished I could have had this book as a reference!!!

Better for older fans of the kawaii world. Mostly introduces you to the artists of certain popular characters, some cute imagery as well. My younger daughter didn't really like it much but did find a few points of interest.

Kaplan's F'd Companies offers an unapologetically acerbic opinion on dozens of the most outrageous. Kaplan, a programmer turned consultant whose own online dreams began when he launched a bulletin board system for pirated game software back in 1989, pulls no punches as he bluntly dissects Web failures that remain dazzling for their pretentious plans and audacious executions. There are big names like Webvan ("a classic example of PAYING more for products than they were SELLING them for") and Go.com (a "portal to nowhere"), but most here are less well known despite similarly burning through cash like a cyber-brushfire. In language far more explicit than his softened-for-the-bookstore title, Kaplan skewers the likes of Iam.com (which lost $48 million trying to convince models and actors to post their portfolios on the Net), OnlineChoice.com (which spent $20 million to learn consumers weren't interested in group buys of electricity and other utilities), HeavenlyDoor.com (which sunk $26 million into a site peddling caskets and burial plots), and Eppraisals.com (which dropped $15 million on an effort to sell online evaluations of antiques). "I'm a computer programmer," Kaplan writes. "I'm that dude at your office in the dark cubicle who nobody listens or pays attention to (especially the hotties in marketing)." Kaplan's claim to fame is FuckedCompany.com, a Web site he built over Memorial Day weekend in 2000 to serve as a forum for bad news about Internet companies. His timing a few months after the Internet bubble began to deflate was perfect, and FuckedCompany became an immediate hit. Thousands of fired or about-to-be-fired dot-commers were more than willing to share their horror stories about the collapse of one Internet company after another. He has translated the material posted on the site into a book, offering brief vignettes of the demise of more than 150 Internet ventures. His basic formula includes a description of what the company purported to do (Mercata.com "customers would use the site to band together and purchase merchandise at wholesale prices"), how much money it blew through before going bankrupt and how many people were fired ("$89 million and 100 employees were burned"). Kaplan, 25, attempts to enliven each story with humor, which is often more crude than clever. That many of the stories sound the same is not Kaplan's fault, as most really are: someone comes up with an idea, finds a venture capitalist willing to pour funding into the company despite the flimsiest of business plans, and then goes broke when the money dries up. Although he tries, Kaplan delivers little more than an elegy for the Industry Standard, Pets.com, Contentville.com, Flooz.com, Bid.com and Kozmo.com, not to mention Zing.com, ProcessTree.com and MetalSpectrum.com.

As the dot-com boom ended, Kaplan established a web site, fuckedcompanies.com, to help keep track of the bankruptcies, massive layoffs, and sometimes ill-conceived ideas that failed. The site began as a joke but was chosen as "Site of the Year" by Yahoo! Internet Life in 2000 and as one of the year's best by Time. Kaplan, now the president of an e-commerce solutions firm, here chronicles the rise and rapid fall of numerous dot-coms. Written in an informal style and sprinkled with salty language, his book explains why each company was formed and why it was doomed to failure. At Pets.Com, for instance, pet owners could order food and supplies; "then I'll watch the dog starve and the cat shit all over the house while I wait for it to be delivered!" Several other dot-coms were fined because they failed to deliver items by the holidays as promised. Included in the sources section are web sites that the author consulted; future editions would do well to include a bibliography of articles and books for further reading. A fun, quick read, but hardly a business book

...I work for an established and successful software company which happens to be located in a San Francisco district where there used to be dozens of dotcoms around (they're ALL gone now)...the CEO of my employer brings his lunch plate over and asks if he could sit with me for lunch...the first thing he asks, "What are you reading?" Great. Instead of having a Jack Welch or Peter Lynch or even a Tom Peters book in my hand, I had to tell my employer's CEO, who I know reads many serious business books, and, of course, has to run a real technology company with real customers, real products, real profits, real shareholders, real competitors, and real business issues, that I'm spending my precious time and mental capacity reading about dotcom flameouts chronicled with sarcasm and dirty words. Fortunately, he had heard of the website before and I was able to recite off the top of my head a few quick stories of some of the more extreme situations mentioned in the book, such as the dotcom which raised $26M in venture capital just after they toured the investors in front of accountants and engineers who were faking themselves as customer service reps on dead phone lines with non-existent customers. Needless to say, we ended up changing the subject to more relevant business matters. Phew! Thanks, Pud!

If You've Read The Web Site, Don't Bother

If you have been to the web site that spawned this book, you've had access to all this book has to offer. There is no new insight, no new research, no significant details about any of the companies listed, and apparently nobody felt the need to clean up any of the prose. If you are expecting any sort of analysis of any of the companies, you won't find it here. This book is purely anecdotal.
Still, that said, bits of this book can be humorous. I couldn't read it straight through, but you can pick it up at any page and find yet another story of somebody who thought banner ads would fund their silly idea.

An Irreverent, Profane, and Addicting Read

OK, I'll admit it: I'm a f'd company.com junkie, so buying Pud's book was a no-brainer. If you're looking for learned musings and profound business thought, look elsewhere. "F'd Companies" is written in the style of an Internet bulletin board - reading more like graffiti than The Wall Street Journal. But that's not a bad thing. Kaplan's crudely cynical critiques of ill-conceived businesses are outlandish and darkly humorous. In rapid-fire case after case, he recounts the foibles of 20-somethings as they burn through tens or hundreds of millions of dollars that venture capitalists and corporations are all to willing to throw at them.
A few excerpts:
On Digiscents, which spend $20M on a device to plug into your computer to produce "smells" relevant to the content viewed:
"Besides, potential customers weren't too keen on having a bunch of nasty-smelling chemicals pumped up their noses."
Or "Flooz", the infamous Internet "alternate currency", which flushed over $50M in a couple of years, but also attracted thieves in Russia and the Philippines who used stolen credit cards to rack up over $300K in Flooz dollars.
And eHobbies, the failed online Hobby Shop, which claimed bird-watching a $34B industry - four-times larger than movie-going. When these figures were challenged in a story by The Wall Street Journal, a spokesperson explained the figures included things like "binoculars, hats, sunglasses, cameras, and bird-houses, and expenses incurred on bird watching trips, such as gas, hotels, the cost of renting a tent ... sales of log cabins, boats and trunks."
I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the tales told by employees of the "F'd Companies", which make up such an important part of the website. And after a while, Pud's rants and profanity become tiresome - better taken in smaller, daily website-sized bites than in an entire book. Yet I still found the book amusing and addictive, and Kaplan's self-modesty a refreshing contrast to the arrogant and elitist attitudes of the executives and investors of whom he writes. Above all else, Kaplan captures the silliness and self-importance of the dot.com hype in a style that is unique to the Internet counter-culture. While certainly not a literary triumph, "F'd Companies" is an important reflection on this bizarre period of US business, and as such will outlast most of the dot.coms that were founded during these years.

Written over a century ago, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness continues to dominate our vision of the Congo, unlikely as it might seem that a late-Victorian novella could encapsulate a country roughly equal in size to the United States east of the Mississippi. Conrad's Congo is hell itself, a place where civilization won't take, where literal and metaphor darknesses converge, and where human conduct, unmoored from social (Western, in other words) norms, turns barbaric. As Robert Edgerton shows in this crisply narrated yet sweeping work of history, the Congo is still trying to awaken from the nightmare of its past, struggling to pull free from the grip of the "heart of darkness" cliche.

Plundered for centuries for its natural resources (which remain Africa's most abundant), the Congo was not always a place of horror. Before the Portuguese landed on its shores at the end of the 15th century, it was a prosperous and thriving region. The Congo River, the world's second longest as well as the deepest, and one of the only routes to the continent's interior, provided indigenous populations with ample means for living and trading. What the Portuguese found first to exploit were people, and with the slave trade began a dizzying downward spiral of conquest and degradation that continued for centuries. By the 19th century the race to explore the full length of the legendary river masked a fight for territorial and moral control among the French, Arabs, British, Germans, as well as American missionaries, all of whom dreamed of possessing Africa's very heart. When King Leopold of Belgium managed to solidify control in 1885, the Congo "question" seemed solved. His reign, of course, was almost pathological in its cruelty-the true source of Conrad's "horror"-and its grim legacy endures to this day.

Edgerton documents the Congo's long, sad history with a sense of empathy with and admiration for the character of the land and its inhabitants. Since independence in June 1960, the country has endured the machinations and disappointments of one dictator after another, beginning with Patrice Lumumba, and continuing through Joseph Mobutu, Laurent Kabila, and today Kabila's son, Joseph, who assumed power after his father was assassinated in January 2001. Whether called the "Congo Free State," or "Zaire," or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country remains perilously unstable.

During the past few years, the Congo, long exploited for its natural resources and among the most corrupt countries in Africa, has been explored by a number of authors. Most of these books have been journalistic accounts, but Edgerton offers a historical narrative of a country ravaged by colonial exploitation and the corrupt rule of a native despot. His story is familiar, but it is told accurately and well, from the arrival of Portuguese explorers in the 16th century through the recent, brief rule of Laurent Kabila. The author doesn't neglect the detrimental role played by the West: the rule of Belgium's King Leopold symbolized the worst of colonial exploitation. But Edgerton (The Fall of the Asante Empire), a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, refrains from turning this into an anti-West morality tale. He shows how Arab invaders spread cannibalism and notes that Africans have not redeemed themselves when in charge of the country. As a result, there's little reason to doubt Edgerton's conclusion: "Even if an agreement about elections and army integration were, by some miracle, to take place, there is no reason to believe that peace would be restored" to this embattled country. This book serves as a basic primer on how one of the world's most mineral-rich countries was turned into one of its greatest tragedies. 8 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

Without a doubt one of the most troubled regions in Africa, the Congo has a complex, often disturbing history. Populated by several different cultures, including the Mbuti Pygmies and the Bakongo, the Congo was unknown to Europeans until Diogo Cao, a Portuguese captain, ventured into its depths in 1482. Cao and his men were treated well, and in time more Europeans followed, many of them famous explorers, such as David Livingstone and Henry Stanley. Missionaries followed as well, determined to convert the peoples of the Congo to Christianity. King Leopold's "ownership" of the Congo--private property until Belgium "bought" it from him in 1908--devastated the denizens by forcing them to work under conditions so horrific that the population plummeted from 20 million to 6 million in less than 30 years. The year 1960 brought Congolese independence and ultimately brought to power Joseph-Desire Mobutu, who proved to be every bit as corrupt as his European predecessors. Joseph Kabila, the son of Mobutu's successor, now faces an international war and startling poverty levels. An engrossing albeit tragic history. Kristine Huntley

A Good Primer on The Congo

This book describes Africa's Heart of Darkness-The Congo. It is a region of heavy jungle in central Africa that is best known, to put it mildly, for barbarism.

In many ways the book is more about the European explorers and pioneers that lived in the region rather than the indigenous people of the Congo. Sub-Sahara Africa has little history and fewer cultural artifacts.

This is an easy read for those interested in Africa and its dark heart.

This book opened my eyes to many pieces of history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Robert Edgerton does a masterful job presenting key elements that brought this region of Africa to the place it is in today.

A summary history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Another fine book from Edgerton. For an anthropologist, Edgerton does a good job writing history. There have been several fine books about the Congo Free State and even Mobutu's Zaire, but none have wrapped up the history of this huge country as Edgerton has in this recent book. Basically, the author starts out with the description of the country, followed by a chapters on discovering the Congo, the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, the independence and civil war period, and Mobutu's Zaire.
The history goes through 2001.
I would have loved to see some views on what will happen to the Congo. Edgerton states that this country is rich in natural resources, but I wonder if it can really remain one single country due to the many tribes who live in the DRC. Ethnic hatreds flamed by neighboring aggressive countries will test the strength of this country remaining as one. If not, perhaps the DRC and it's people will continue to hang on after more bad governments. For those interested in Africa, this is a worthwhile book.

I've read most of Dr. Joe Vitale's books and many more like them! Each one is a good reminder of the level at which I wish to live my life. I do expect miracles and I'm never surprised when one of them appears in a book that I'm prompted to read. This does not disappoint!

This is the perfect guide for both Graphic Design Students and Educators - in giving advice about freelance design and how to ease into "real world" experiences. Since the book is divided into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Sections, students can relate at any level. Additionally Hannam provides external resources and downloads.

Exceptionally readable and practical guide for arts-related freelancers

A GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENT'S GUIDE TO FREELANCE is specifically written for graphic design students preparing for graphic design careers which, at least initially, involve freelancing. In this regard, it is exceptionally thorough, readable and practical.

Its usefulness, however, is not limited to current graphic design students or recent graduates. I am neither. But as a freelance instructor and tutor of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (as well as web designer), I work frequently with beginning graphic designers, and also deal with the multitude of tasks related to having an arts-related business. The audience for this book is significantly larger than the title may imply - it is likely to be valuable to readers who like me are freelancers in related fields, and with a variety of levels of experience.

Divided into sections related to tasks facing beginning, intermediate and advanced stages of developing a freelance business (my only criticism of this division is the author's relegating the task of creating a web site to the advanced level) author Hannam discusses just about every topic his readers are likely to want to address. His book answers all of the following questions (and more), and gives helpful examples:

How best can you define your business, choose a name, create your logo?

How do you create a business plan for yourself?

What kinds of projects are most suitable for a beginning freelancer? An intermediate or advanced freelancer?

What helpful tips can enable you to improve your resume?

In what different ways might you prepare portfolios for freelancing, agency work or graduate school?

How do you attract clients - and determine the best clients for your skills?

How should you inquire about a job, prepare for an interview, and negotiate an offer?

Personally, I found the author's tips for organizing a freelance business to be particularly useful, as well as some of the features he includes at the end of the book - nine pages of valuable tips from graphic design professionals, and an annotated list of approximately 50 web sites recommended to graphic designers and freelancers in related professions.

All-in-all, this is an outstanding book - not only practical, but beautifully designed, and a joy to read. No beginning graphic designer or arts-related freelancer should be without it.

Good, Practical advice

The best advice in this book comes early on. The author advices the graphic design student to seek out freelance work prior to graduation. To begin to build a portfolio. And then the author goes on to describe where those opportunities might exist and how to set rates.
The author gives real life scenarios that help you set apart from the people who pepper their portfolio with school projects (making the likelihood that your portfolio will resemble someone else's much higher).
You are shown how to understand social and technological trends before determining the nature of your business, picking a business name. There is quick identification as to strengths and weaknesses of a business plan. There is practical advice about creating an LLC and how to get an employers identification number for the IRS. The book not only talks about how to attract clients, but also how to hold the interview once you've found someone.
There are creative hints about how to find an internship.
All in all, I think this book is a creative and supportive source for students to grow into practiced and professional graduates.

This work is intended to�provide a concise introduction to the spectral theory of Hilbert space operators. With an emphasis on detailed proofs and�recent aspects of theory, it�can serve as�a modern textbook for a first graduate course in the subject.�The coverage of topics is thorough, exploring various intricate points and hidden features often left untreated.

The book begins with a primer on Hilbert space theory, summarizing the basics required for the remainder of the book and establishing unified notation and terminology.�After this, standard spectral results for (bounded linear) operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces, including the classical partition of the spectrum and spectral properties for specific classes of operators, are discussed. A study of the spectral theorem for normal operators follows, covering both the compact and the general case, and proving both versions of the theorem in full detail. This leads into an investigation�of functional calculus for normal operators and Riesz functional calculus, which in turn is followed by Fredholm theory and compact perturbations of the spectrum, where a finer analysis of the spectrum is worked out. Here, further partitions involving the essential spectrum, including the Weyl and Browder spectra,�are introduced.�The final�section of the book�deals with�Weyl's and Browder's theorems and�provides a look at�very recent results.�

About the Author

Carlos Kubrusly was born in Rio de Janeiro in November 1947. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in 1976, held postdoctoral visiting research positions at the Universities of Warwick and Bonn, and has been a faculty member of Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro since 1972, where he became a full professor in 1988. Professor Kubrusly has published over 100 scientific articles in international journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has participated in�approximately 40�scientific conferences, all with paper presentation, including plenary sections at the Toulouse IFAC Symposium in 1982 and at the Newport Beach SOTA Conference in 1998, and has also been a member of program committees of several international conferences.

Professor Kubrusly�was the editor-in-chief of the journal Computational and Applied Mathematics (published by Birkh�user from 1992 to 1998), and coeditor of the book Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications (Optimization Software, Los Angeles, 2002). He is the author of five books: "An Introduction to Models and Decompositions in Operator Theory", "Elements of Operator Theory", and "Hilbert Space Operators", all published by Birkh�user in 1997, 2001, and 2003, respectively; "Measure Theory" by Academic Press in 2007; and recently, "The Elements of Operator Theory" (2nd enlarged and updated edition of "Elements of Operator Theory") published by Birkh�user in 2011.

A great book about Spectral Theory

This book mainly concern is to investigate the spectrum of operators (i.e., continuous linear transformations) on Hilbert Spaces. Unbounded operators and results on Banach space are not the focus here. It introduces classical topics such as C*-Algebra, Functional Calculus and Fredholm Theory. Futhermore, Kubrusly made a brilliant exposition of the Spectral Theorem, one the cornerstone theorems on Operator Theory on Hilbert Spaces.
