Embrace The Weird

This is the first Doctor Strange book that I've ever read. I had heard a lot of good things about the good doctor and his current series, and recently I went and saw his movie and was impressed with what I had seen. So I decided to give this book a try. And I was not disappointed in the slightest. The story was pretty straightforward. Doctor Strange at first was dealing with other people's odd mystical problems (a typical day for him). When suddenly he started encountering various creatures and situations that were weird even for him, and he didn't understand why. It was a very intriguing story, and as it played out, I was left wondering "What is Doctor Strange going to do now?". In other words, it left me wanting more. The art was very vivid, and it depicted Doctor Strange, his spells, and the mystical creatures and places he encountered very well. Overall, I would recommend this book to both new (like me) and old Strange fans.

Dr. Strange done well

Dr. Strange is one of Marvel 's most famous and most interesting characters. But he has rarely been well-written. Most writers throw him in as a powerful yet "mysterious" good guy but leave the character completely uninteresting or shoehorn him into lackluster storylines. But Jason Aaron does a great job of bringing a fresh and interesting take on the character while spinning a fun story that actually seems to mean something.

A Great Introduction To The Character

I'd never read a Doctor Strange comic before. Shortly after the film I was asking around about the comics. I'd heard that there'd been some great comics and some not-so-great, which isn't that unique I guess. This volume was recommend to me as one of the more entertaining, classic style adventures. I had a blast reading this one. It's full of the kind of weirdness the film didn't want to get into with some beautifully drawn action panels. The humor is pretty good and the characterization felt natural. Most of the time I was reading it I was wishing Robert Downey Jr. had played Doctor Strange instead of Tony Stark. Strange is much snarkier and wittier than Stark feels in the comics. No matter, this is still a fun read that doesn't require a lot of knowledge to understand.

About the Author
Robert Skinner has degrees in history (Old Dominion University) and library science (Indiana University) and studied creative writing at the University of New Orleans. He's widely known for his non-fiction writing on the career of African-American novelist Chester Himes and on the American hard-boiled crime story. He's the author of two previous Wesley Farrell novels, Skin Deep, Blood Red, (1997) andCat-Eyed Trouble (1998). He makes his home in New Orleans where he's University Librarian at Xavier University of Louisiana.

Eating plan; not a diet

This is the best book on Intermittent Fasting. The author gives you everything that you need to know about the eating plan and does simplify the science behind why it works in language that is understandable. I would agree with some reviewers about the physicality of the book...it can be problematic. There are no page numbers, chapter headings, or index. However, I own both the Kindle version and the hard copy of the book (that in itself should tell you what I think of the book), but he does give you reminders at the end of each chapter. It is very easy to riffle through, so I don't think it's a problem. It is, after all, content. I have been on the diet for six months. I have dieted most of my adult life to maintain my weight and have tried everything...Paleo, Atkins, Zone. If you saw me in person, you would say, what the heck is she talking about! I am thin...I am an obese person just waiting to get out, and DNA testing confirmed that I am prone to obesity. I am 5' 5" and currently weigh 130 pounds. I have lost 8 pounds which were absolutely intractable, and the weight was all around my waist and middle. Very dangerous! I am maintaining my weight at 130 pounds; look fabulous; have boundless energy, and I'm regaining my memory and my mental sharpness. I am 68. I just have a couple of things to say: NEVER underestimate the American social pressure to eat, eat, eat! I chose to not eat breakfast mainly because of social pressure. However, get in a crowd of Americans at breakfast time, and you get, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day". Just smile, and say, yes...I eat my breakfast at noon. Don't try to convince them...there's been too much propaganda surrounding breakfast. Stay hydrated during your fasting period. I drink two big glasses of water when I first get up and have two cups of black coffee in the morning. I drink water throughout the morning. Don't be afraid...you won't be hungry! I would also suggest that you eat your sugary items at lunchtime. If you eat too much sugar at your last meal and don't get enough protein at your last meal, you will be hungry during the awake portion of the fasting period. I have not overeaten during my "feeding" time; I eat normally and I am not hungry. Well, maybe not for us Americans; I don't eat the portions that are sized for a family of four. I looked into this diet because my triglycerides were sky high. My doctor was mystified because I am thin, but I carried my weight around my waist. I have since discussed this diet with my primary care physician, and she is on board with the "thirder" plan. Enjoy this eating plan!

Very informative

I've been on a fat loss journey since January, and am always looking for better ways to accomplish my goals. I've been doing pretty well with just food logs and exercise, but I'm always open to better ideas. When I started using kettlebells for my workouts, I ran across a kettlebell instructor who touts the advantages of micro-fasts. So, I decided to do some research.

Imagine my surprise when I found this book for free - thank you, Amazon!

Most books on intermittent fasting champion one method and ignore the others, but this book describes the three main variations on the theme: the 16 hour micro-fast, the alternate day method and the 5-2 method. The author gives a detailed description of what's involved in all three, and even includes chapters on exercise, eating strategies to make the diet work better, motivation, etc. - even a chapter discussing the research studies.

If you're thinking about intermittent fasting, I would highly recommend this book as an excellent starting place.

More than what I expected!

I downloaded a sample and it held my attention so I bought it last night. There is a lot of information of which I thought I knew it all but found myself learning much more. I like especially his information on HiiT (high intensity interval training) and how it works well in conjunction to Intermittant Fasting. I would rather exercise smarter and shorter and he details how starting from a beginniner to advanced levels. He also goes into the science and research of health benefits of IM'ng as well as the freedom of eating what you want within reason of course. It's not about gorging within the non-fasting times and we all know that. Eat "normal" is emphasized. He has a down-to-earth, humorous style that made it interesting to read. I wished at the end of the book that it wasn't over.

Excellent book on typography

As a computer professional I found Typography: Macro- and Microaesthetics a compelling introduction to typography and layout. So many of the ideas in this book are helpful to understanding how reports and other printed communications should be developed. I really appreciate the author's care for typographic details and the concise, unpretentious language in explaining how typography works. The book clearly details the basic principles of typographic communication. The generous page size allows the comments and examples to be easily understood.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in typography, desktop publishing, or graphic design.

Of Sober Aesthetics

A pleasant surprise.
The approaches to design that are explored in this book can only be expected from someone intimate with the Swiss school of design thought. Willi Kunz teaches designers to be deliberate and purposeful, which will keep anybody in good stead come economic boom or bust. He is thorough in explaining visually, fundamental theories not only for typography, but for graphic design in general.
On my shelf, this book sits beside Josef Muller-Brockmann's "Grid System in Graphic Design", Armin Hofmann's "Graphic Design Manual" and Robert Bringhurst's "Elements of Typographic Style".
A definite keeper.

J.R.R. A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

Very nice set of books for the price. Recommended. Read review and view pics for detail on font for pocket-sized "paperback."

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go but those people who don't have as good of eye sight, because I know some people who tend to get headaches while focusing on small font, this set may not be for you. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

Great Book, *NOT* a leather binding

Only an balrog could object to an revised 50th anniversary edition, with corrections beyond those in the the standard revised version. BUT...

This is *not* a leather binding: it's a very ordinary hardcover edition with paper-thin faux leather glued over paper boards. The bookmark ribbon breaks the binding. Signatures glued rather than sewn together, not held together by the 'leather,' separated from paper spine. Poor production generally: end papers badly centered, more than a little random glue and rubber cement on the covers that really mars the appearance. Mine is the second printing, I do not see the poor type-setting complained of by other reviewers.

Look at Customer Image #18 to see for your self.

It's an OK one-volume edition, given the revisions and illustrations. *NOT* a 'collectible', barely worth the discounted $56 given the disappointment factor. *Don't* give this as a gift to a Tolkien fan, expecting rapture.

Calling this 'leather bound' is *serious* misrepresentation of the product.

Didn't know about the first two circumnavigations of Australia, stumbled onto this book about the 3rd. Wow. This book will appeal to kayakers in particular, but this adventure will blow anyone's mind. Will give anyone a tremendous appreciation of Australia as an untamed wilderness, and a place where wild paces can still be preserved. So many whales, dugongs, sharks, crocs... Better, more frequent maps would have been helpful in following the journal style narrative.
